Great for Paleo &/or Keto Fast Cooking, and FULL Recipe List Below!
By Matt
We received this book a few days ago, and while we actually follow a ketogenic diet rather than paleo, it is a great resource for recipes and ideas that aren't grain-based. I have the crustless quiche recipe in the instant pot as I type for breakfast. Mmmm. [Actually, it finished while writing this review. It's very tasty, and baked in 15 minutes flat!!!]

We had ordered a "general" instant pot cookbook prior to this, in November when we got the instant pot, but were disappointed by how many things were rice-and-beans, or noodle, etc based. At least 50% of the recipes were just not even "editable" for Keto or Paleo type diets, as they were very heavily based on grains and how they cooked. Of course, the recipes looked super tasty, great ideas -- but weren't that helpful for us. Enter this cookbook!

If you are Keto:
Many of the recipes do use honey or syrup, but they seem easily omit-able in many cases (OK, maybe not the brownies... but in most of the main dishes). There are also potatoes, but again, many times they seem easy enough to omit or replace with other vegetables. Lots of recipes with coconut milk, which is great for keto, and the recipes don't steer clear of fats too much. There are also several obvious substitutions if you don't care about avoiding dairy -- many contain non-dairy milks which can be replaced with cream or regular, use butter instead of ghee, it's easy to add cheese on top of something, etc. -- if you are not truly Paleo.

Of course, if you are Paleo, then this is even better as the recipes follow it to a T from what I can tell! The author eats Paleo to manage several chronic illnesses/conditions (including Lyme), so it seems like she takes compliance pretty seriously there.

I saw a couple comments of "why would I do this in an instant pot?" in prior reviews. It's not always easier or more straightforward, or doesn't necessary make less dishes, etc... but it's WAY FASTER to cook tender, tasty, moist food. Instant pot cooking gives you fall-apart-in-your-mouth beef stew in 35 minutes - rather than 8 hours - if you forgot to set up for the crock pot the night before having to rush out the door at 7AM the next morning. Or chicken breasts in 15 minutes, rather than an hour or more in the oven... Or the BEST hard-boiled eggs I've ever had, consistent and easy. If you get home from a long day at work, need to cook dinner start-to-finish in under an hour, try to go for whole foods rather than pre-prepared store-bought stuff, and have 2 hungry 4-year-olds awaiting you, the instant pot is great, worth it, let's go guys, 100%. Also, while the saute function is helpful, it's definitely an option to just use a pan on the stove for the pre-steps if there's a lot of transferring in and out going on, and that works fine also. This recipe book will give you one potential set of exact steps to follow, and is very clear in the recipes, which is great for beginners, but it's also pretty easy to figure out edits to fit your own lifestyle, experience level with cooking, and tolerance for dishes, time, etc.

While deciding whether to buy, I was disappointed there wasn't a listing of recipes in any review or the "view inside" pages on Amazon. So, here you go:

Not much of a recipe resource
By New Mom '04
I pre-ordered this cookbook and have been looking forward to receiving it. I love IP and was hoping for a plethora of new grain free recipes to add to my weekly rotation of dinners. Instead, I got a few decent new recipes and a book full of alternative ways to cook using the IP, which I was not really looking for.

Example: "bread under pressure" is a bread recipe where you are to use an alternative container (a "coffee canister or other vertically shaped cylinder") covered with foil inside your IP to make bread. Seems to me a loaf pan in the oven would make more sense.

Or a recipe for meatloaf where you wrap it in foil and cook it in the IP. Part of the beauty of IP is the stainless inner pot. I don't cook with aluminum if I can help it because it leaches into my food.

There is a full section for warm beverages that is just kind of useless. Most people have other, faster ways of preparing tea and hot chocolate. Who wants to wash a large bowl and non-dishwasher safe lid & seal to have a cup of tea?

Overall, I was very disappointed that I will probably only use 4-5 of the "80 recipes" in this book. If I lived in a dorm room and had only the IP to do any of my cooking with, this book might be invaluable to me.

Bottom line: If you're looking for a lot of new "set and forget" IP recipes, look elsewhere.

Great instant pot cookbook!
By Carolyn Parker
Love this cookbook!! Love the way it lays open, beautiful pictures and easy to follow recipes and directions! All the recipes sound so good and easy which is great when you have to little ones to take care of!! Today I made the cinnamon apple sauce and the beef stew. Both turned out perfect! With the apple sauce I added more cinnamon just because I'm obsessed with it and I didn't us my immersion blender because I prefer chunky apple sauce. Other than that I followed directions! The stew was a winner as well! I left out the worscestershire this time (on a whole30 at the moment) but that's it. Great flavor and was so quick to put together. The only thing I might do is do 5 to 10 minutes less next time. I'm at high altitude so I think things cook slightly faster here. Really everyone should read through an entire recipe before you diving into cooking. And if you know something cooks faster than by all means adjust the time accordingly. It's not rocket science. That being said I always make the recipe as it's written. If I need to change it next time or tweak this or that, I do it the next time I make the dish!! I've had my instant pot for awhile now and it's so nice to have a book to accompany it now!! I highly recommend this cookbook!

Ideal Intro bk for a Financial Engineering/Risk Mgt course
By Reader from New York
This is probably the ideal introductory textbook for advanced undergrad or MBA/MSc Finance majors for their first Financial Engineering or Risk Management courses.
New students of these subjects would benefit more from reading this textbook than from reading the much more celebrated (whether deserving or not is up to debate) and yet much more expensive John Hull's classic 'Options, Futures, and other Derivatives', despite the fact that Hull's book is a favorite among many college professors (Hull's book was, incidentally, the textbook used in my MBA options and derivatives course)
There are many reasons that I feel this book represents good value and provides a smooth introduction into the world of financial engineering:
1. Comprehensive: All the major financial products and derivatives are thoroughly covered. Advanced topics such as Chooser options and real options are included as well.
2. Available computer/spreadsheet models: To supplement the excellent coverage in the textbook, the author have made available codes on his website for students to download and to further their self-study. The spreadsheets are professionally done and I found them very useful, either as learning tools or as template to develop more advanced models.
3. Clarity of exposition: The style is straightforward, avoiding unnecessary jargons. Yet the authors walk you through each step of the way using examples, graphs(plenty of them), fully developed equations, and tables.
4. Math and theoretical Rigor: This book does not lack mathematical rigor. Technical appendices are included as well, e.g. Ito's Lemma. If needed, relevant literature is quoted for the student to further his/her study.
5. Solid Value: this book can be had for less than fifty dollars. A bargain compared to many other finance books of similar caliber. Getting this book is like getting two for the price of one: both the financial engineering section and that of risk management could have been sold as two separate volumes.
With this book the authors have paved the way for the new students of FE and Risk management to explore these fascinating world. You will not regret the purchase.

Image. Sin. Suicide. Blame. College isn't all kegs and eggs. Chris feels like a loser. He's sick of his Catholic high school life of obedience and order. He goes to college craving something else, but knows he won't find it on his own. The socially adept Ethan takes Chris under his wing, sharing basement revelry traditions and introducing him to campus terrorism, with a few hundred-dollars' worth of innocent fish as victims. Everything seems fine until Ethan puts a gun in his mouth sophomore year. Chris has to find out why the envy of so many chose suicide as his way out. He won't like the answers. Part-memoir, part-fiction, this portrayal of the underside of campus life intertwines sarcasm and skepticism to define a culture seeking the never-ending party.

About the Author
Award-winning journalist and author Brian Krans lives and works in the Midwest. A Constant Suicide is his first novel. Like his characters, Krans' experience at college was filled with many hours in party houses and even longer hours catching up in the library afterward. It was the hectic lifestyle of a student-partier and other forces that sent Krans into a state of depression that ended in a suicide attempt his junior year, only to be rescued by his roommate and cousin. In November 2006, in conjunction with the Q-C November Novelists, Krans expanded a short story he wrote at Winona State University into A Constant Suicide. Between a full-time job as a newspaper reporter, a weekend job as a bartender and volunteering with teenage kids, Krans wrote this part-fiction, part-memoir of his college experience. He is twenty-five years old.

Required reading
By Dean Johnson
A Constant Suicide should be required reading for incoming college freshmen. Brian Kran's debut novel is brutally honest about the struggle for identity and the tragic consequences sometimes associated with it. I'd recommend this book to those college-bound and to those who'd like to reminisce about a period of life full of endless possibility.

Outstanding!
By Katharine Mutert
I did not know what to expect when I began this novel. However, Brian Krans' first novel, A Constant Suicide, is well written and developed. It sucked me in right away. The story jumps around from present to past to excerpts from a journal entry and back to the present. The characters were easy to identify with. We all can look back to college years and remember the pressures and stigmas and cliches. Everyone will get something different out of this book. Sometimes the people you are closest to are the farthest away.

Quite a good read
By Jack Golding
I got this book off a list from Yahoo answers of 'books that are like fight club' - thought I'd give this one a try.

I found that it started with the philosophy of the antagonist being pushed into every other character however I found the last 3 quarters of the book very good.

The Lie That Tells a Truth: A Guide to Writing Fiction, by John Dufresne

"This is the most practical, hard-nosed, generous, direct, and useful guide to writing fiction."―Brad Watson

Finally, a truly creative―and hilarious―guide to creative writing, full of encouragement and sound advice. Provocative and reassuring, nurturing and wise, The Lie That Tells a Truth is essential to writers in general, fiction writers in particular, beginning writers, serious writers, and anyone facing a blank page.

John Dufresne, teacher and the acclaimed author of Love Warps the Mind a Little and Deep in the Shade of Paradise, demystifies the writing process. Drawing upon the wisdom of literature's great craftsmen, Dufresne's lucid essays and diverse exercises initiate the reader into the tools, processes, and techniques of writing: inventing compelling characters, developing a voice, creating a sense of place, editing your own words. Where do great ideas come from? How do we recognize them? How can language capture them? In his signature comic voice, Dufresne answers these questions and more in chapters such as "Writing Around the Block," "Plottery," and "The Art of Abbreviation." Dufresne demystifies the writing process, showing that while the idea of writing may be overwhelming, the act of writing is simplicity itself.

From Publishers Weekly
A novelist and teacher, Dufresne (Deep in the Shade of Paradise) shares his blunt views on writing in this instruction book, which draws heavily on the tenets of realist fiction and method acting. Divided into two main sections-"The Process" focuses on habits and emotions; "The Product" emphasizes narrative mechanics-Dufresne's manual often adopts the tone of a fiery professor advising a group of wide-eyed young freshmen. "Fiction writing is arrested development," he declares. "Just know that you should quit right now if you can." Readers may sometimes feel lectured by his many stern instructions-"Thou Shalt Not Be Obscure," "Thou Shalt Show and Not Tell," "Thou Shalt Steal"-but the author hits his stride when he covers the mechanics of story. Particularly valuable is his advice on choosing character names, occupations, and points of view. A principle of acting teachers Konstantin Stanislavsky and Michael Chekhov-that exterior movement leads to interior feeling-forms the basis of one of Defresne's two chapters on characterization. Elsewhere, he skillfully analyzes the work of his favorite writers Anton Chekhov, Frank O'Connor and Eudora Welty. (Dufresne also mines his own work for examples of process and technique.) Each chapter closes with a set of writing exercises. Although this volume is unlikely to displace classic fiction guides like E.M. Forster's Aspects of the Novel, many readers may respond to the author's encouraging, exhorting tone.

From Booklist
Like so many writers' guides, this one talks about creating a character, finding an idea, constructing a plot, and the rest of it. It does all of that quite well, too, but what makes it stand out in this popular genre is its tone and approach. Novelist Dufresne, the author of Deep in the Shade of Paradise (2002), lays out the storytelling process clearly and simply. "Fiction is telling the truth, not telling the facts." His tone is light, amiable, conversational: a professional storyteller talking to someone who wants to be a professional storyteller. Writing, he tells us, is about trusting our feelings, about describing the essence of a scene without getting bogged down in irrelevant details. Peppering his text with inspirational and instructional quotes from a variety of writers (Joseph Heller: "Every writer I know has trouble writing"), Dufresne delivers a book that is both a tremendous inspiration to novice writers struggling with their craft and a useful guide to the technical aspects of turning words into stories. I'm in love with this book
By Robert Graves
John Dufresne's "The Lie That Tells A Truth" is one of the best books on writing that I own, rivaling even Steven King's "On Writing." From the start, TLTTAT gets you writing, the most obvious and ironically overlooked aspect of being a writer.
The introduction starts, "I'll assume that if you're reading this introduction, then you must want to write. Why else would you be loitering around the Writing/Publishing section of the bookstore when all the really interesting and dangerous people are over in the Self-Help/Addiction aisle?" The book is laden with a self-aware humor, knowing writers are in a desperate state, completely miserable when they are not writing yet so prone to finding other things to fill their time.
TLTTAT is divided into three main sections that logically break the writing process down. The first section, "The Process," covers the basics of getting it in gear and writing a story. He repeats again and again that a writer writes, and if you're not writing every day then you are "inviting madness." I could relate to this deeply. There's nothing more frustrating than wanting to write but for some reason not doing it. Dufresne's solution is simple - just do it. And he gives you plenty of exercises to get you going. In this first section he also discusses rewriting, clearly driving the point home that rewriting is the essence of writing. In fact, he's able to show, in what might be the only book I know of that does this, the real process of writing a novel or screenplay or short story or poem, or any work of creativity. He tells you to disallow your critical self to sit down at the desk with you while writing the first draft, to write from the heart. Get to know your characters and then allow them to lead you through their story (and he provides exercises to encourage this). Then, discussing the revision process, he specifically outlines several steps you can take to produce stronger writing, such as eliminating adverbs, eliminating most adjectives, avoiding the passive voice. These things may seem obvious, but he presents them in a lucid way, with actual examples of revision, that will improve your overall writing quality.
The second section deals with the specifics of plot development, dialogue, character growth, point of view, beginnings and endings, and settings. Taking what you know from how the writing of a story actually occurs (from the first section) you now learn the mechanics of developing that story.
The last section is primarily about how to glean the most from the work of others.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. If you are an aspiring writer, buy this book today, along with Steven King's "On Writing" and Linda Seger's "Making a Good Writer Great." In a library full of writing books, "The Lie That Tells a Truth" shines brightly.

A great teacher
By Lazyboy
I procrastinated writing this review for weeks because it meant so much to me.
The great gift this book offers is its infinite passion for writing. You feel it from the author and from all the great authors whose quotes are included. Being immersed in this love of literature for the time it took me to read and reread this book was a pleasure.
The book also provides great insights into creating characters, starting stories, writing dialogue, "borrowing from other writers", and common mistakes made by authors.
The following two points helped me the most. First, don't be discouraged by flawed first drafts and scenes that don't match the images you had in your head when you decided to write them. All writers experience this. Rewriting is where the magic occurs.
Second, only include writing that advances the story or reveals something important about the charactor. No matter how much you love a scene you wrote, remove it if it doesn't meet this criteria.
I can't recommend this book enough.

A Rich Resource for Teachers and Students of All Levels
By Heather G. Salerno
The Lie That Tells a Truth: A Guide to Writing Fiction is a rich resource for teachers of any fiction course (high school to graduate level), aspiring writers, or veteran writers seeking inspiration or the decadal refresher. Regardless of level or need, Dufresne has something for everyone. He covers the gamut, from the creative writing process (freewriting, first drafts, the habit of writing, your writing room, etc.) to the fundamentals of story craft (plot, dialogue, character, etc.).

There are three main parts: Process, Product, and Other Matters. Process addresses every obstacle an aspiring writer faces, from finding time to write to revising for clichs. Many points in this section bear mentioning, but I'll limit it to a few: Dufresne suggests harvesting material for stories from your own life, while minding the ethics of such theft (His mantra: First do no harm). He also notes that expecting too much from a first draft is a common beginning writer's mistake. And finally he prompts the writer to see, "to look at (the world) an inch at a time," so that our writing can light up with such details. In the Product section, Dufresne tackles the elements of craft. His chapters flow from openings/endings to plot to character to dialogue. In the section, The Queen Died of Grief, Dufresne explains the difference between a story and a plot, championing that a plot contains cause and effect, while story, in its rawest form, is simply news. And finally, in Other Matters, Dufresne discusses the necessity of writers to be readers and suggests that writers begin compiling catalogues (Sears, office supplies, lingerie, etc.) for imagining setting and details in your stories.

What makes this guide unique is Dufresne's voice, tone, and candor. He exposes his life and his writing mishaps in an attempt to demystify the writing process. For example, in the chapter titled, Doing It Again (And Again [And Again]), during a list of inspirational revision tips, Dufresne breaks the prose to write, "(I just wrote two lines here, and then I took them out. Here they are [or were]: Visualize your characters..." Dufresne goes on to share a long, nonsensical, and clunky sentence. By giving us his raw revision, we see it in contrast to his inspirational prose and the point of revision is hammered home. The guide is practical and straightforward, peppered by thought-provoking quotes by fiction greats. Dufresne diffuses the reader's writing fears by offering systematic advice for every possible writing obstacle or blunder. And at the end of each chapter there are exercises that reinforce the chapter's lesson.

Some quotable/referenceable moments: "The worst thing you can do in writing a first draft is to let your critical self (the boss) sit down at the writing table with your creative self" (page 72). Later, when discussing revision, Dufresne offers 15 editing/polishing tips on pages 87 through 90, including Challenge every adjective, Challenge the first and last paragraph, Cut every nonessential dialogue tag, and Challenge every line that you love.

The greatest strength of this guide is Dufresne's view of the first draft. In the brilliant section, Getting Black on White, he argues that the true first draft is the exploratory/discovery draft. Here the author is painting the set, from the rug to the roof. Dufresne suggests freewriting the set until the room is alive in your mind and on the paper. Then do the same for the characters. The first draft can go on for days, notebooks even, until the world you've created and its characters become clear. Dufresne writes of his first draft, "I answered the questions for days, writing away in my notebook" (page 74). The story you will start to tell in your second draft will be born of this first draft, but in the first draft there is no story yet. Here you are simply exploring.

As Breton might have fought with Greenberg, so might I fight with Dufresne. Dufresne subscribes to the freewriting school of thought, frowning on thoughtful plotting before the pen has met the page, or even after the first draft. It is not until many drafts into your story that Dufresne suggests you ask the story (page 85), "What is my story about?" While I plan on trying to leave the critic at home during my first draft, I think the content critic should creep in much sooner that Dufresne suggests. I am not sure this is a weakness of the guide, though, but rather a difference of opinion.

Urgency rating:

-Drop everything and read right now. Okay, well not right now, but definitely the next time you are stuck on a story, experiencing writer's block, or are just about to teach an introduction to fiction class. Then, yes--drop everything (unless you're carrying something fragile, like a baby or a melon.)

What immediately pops into your mind when you hear the word genius? Perhaps you think of people like Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Leonardo da Vinci, or Thomas Edison, just to name a few.

What did all these folks have? What common factors made them geniuses? And is it possible for you to be like them?

Now, what is a genius? Geniuses are, first and foremost, extraordinary individuals....

They are always somewhat ahead of their times, and their contributions to the world have shaped society into what it is today. With all their remarkable feats of achievement - just look at how far we have come in modern medicine, science, and technologies - geniuses have helped mankind evolve into more intelligent beings; they have pushed us to all strive for even greater possibilities.

So how do you become a genius?

The widely accepted notion is that you're either born with a genius IQ or you're not. However, being a genius has little to do with your level of intelligence. Everybody has his or her own form of genius. The key is learning how to unlock that inner genius of yours.

Within Instant Genius you will learn:

  • How to easily create a custom "genius trigger button", step by step, so you can activate it to turn on your full intellectual mental capacity at will anywhere, anytime
  • How to channel your inner genius, through the power of your subconscious mind, by doing the "subconscious self-session" technique to open doors to new ways of thinking
  • How to use personalized "visual mental imprints" as your sources of inspiration and motivation in order to spark your creative genius and generate unlimited innovative ideas

You don’t have to be a genius to be as smart as one.
By Eric McClellan
“The widely-accepted notion is...you're either born with a genius IQ or not; however, being a genius has less to do with your level of intelligence…The key is how to unlock that inner genius of yours.” This!
After reading that part in the description, I decided to go ahead and try out the book for myself, and I’m glad I did. Most of the people I’ve met all the way up to senior year in college seem to always put limitations on themselves as to why they can’t do certain things. Outside of physical activities and sports, academics seem to be the most prominent with a lot of my friends whining about not being geniuses so that’s why they can’t do “XY” in class “AB”, which is why I’m glad I can show them this book to prove to them it’s all mental.

After going through some of the exercises in the book some I felt had immediate effect on my sub-conscious while some of the others seemed to slowly start taking effect with repetition either weekly or daily. What kept me engaged was that it never felt like too much, and felt like everything was broken down in an easy enough way that didn’t require hours to understand which is good considering I have a life with school and work so I can imagine those of you who are reading this now are probably somewhere in similar time constraint.

Anyways, ‘Instant Genius’ was a good read that was very informative and had pretty cool “how to” strategies, and other exercises that I felt kept my brain mentally sharp and growing. After reading I definitely feel that you don’t have to “be a genius to be as smart as one”.

Insightful Book
By Charles
This book is not what I thought it would be based on the cover and description. I was expecting to read a long history of geniuses and what got them there. In that regard, I was disappointed because I like biographies. The most mention of Geniuses took place in the first section where only a couple were mentioned. There was not much detail about those mentioned. However, once I got over my disappointment and dug into the book, I was surprised in a good way.

The book had a test at the beginning to see if you could find a certain number of words in a certain amount of time. They were arranged as a word find. This was a litmus test of intelligence, but I think also to prove anyone can be a genius, which is a premise of the book. This was what was surprising, and refreshing. After this challenge, the book jumps into practical theory about how the brain works and how that can aid the ability to be a genius. Then the book jumps into practical steps on how to be a genius. This was not something I was expecting, but it was nice to see this as you probably can only gleam so much from reading biographies of intelligent people. Actually knowing how to turn myself into a genius was a comforting notion.

One powerful example of becoming a genius the book mentioned was in chapter 4 when it discussed the idea of a personal logo. I found this fascinating. The idea of a personal logo that could represent who I was and be a trigger to help me stay on course to be a genius is brilliant. Another example in that chapter is the use of a genius switch. This is identifying a memory that you can call on to inspire you to do your best. It is practical ideas like this and other challenges in the book that make the notion of becoming a genius more real.

The book goes on to help walk you through obstacles to becoming a genius, how to overcome them, and how to become a genius by having a plan to face these obstacles. It helps you get out of your own way essentially. The exercise makes you think about your choices and there consequences. It is a powerful tool.
There are many other tools that make you think and process what you need to do in your life to become a genius.

All that said, I am skeptical about if the book will really work. Some of the material I have seen or heard in other productivity books. And some of the ideas stuck, while others did not. So, I am not convinced any guidebook like this can make you anything. It takes work and persistence to achieve in life. This book does a great job of showing you the path and helping you work your way down it step by step. But, the real work is up to you after you have worked through the book.

Food for the soul
By Michael DiCroce
I purchased this novel as a guide to my business life. I was curious to see what it had to offer. Boy was I fulfilled. The main point of the publish is to demonstrate how individuals can help boost their overall psyche by following the program.

So check it out there are genius's out there aka Bill Gates, Michael Dell etc. The truth is you do not have to be the inventor of Microsoft to be considered a genius. People assume that you are pre ordained with this talent from birth, which is a common misconception. In chapter Two, it explains our sub-conscious which is voted most complex areas of the mind. So for those who do not know what it is, it is your "inner voice" like your soul. Its the voice in the back of your head that nobody ever hears.

So everybody knows the term 9-5. This is the mentality of that of a conformist. Fatigue is something we all have to deal with and this book helps teach us to "train" our mind and body. The article takes you out of your comfort zone by performing a simple exercise which trains brain stimulation. The trick is to combat these fears which in my opinion makes perfect sense. If we sleep all day how will be ever become truly genius?

Penthurst long ago concluded Lydia was a woman in search of ruinous adventure, but even he is surprised when she arrives at his house ready to bet her innocence against his ten thousand pounds—a wager he only proposed to warn her off gambling.

Review
Praise for THE ACCIDENTAL DUCHESS:
"Blackmailed and faced with embarrassment and the suspicion of treason if the draft of her ill-advised, racy adventure novel is made public, unconventional Lady Lydia Alfreton heads to the gaming tables to raise some cash. Sadly, her gambling plan goes awry, and she is forced to call in an old bet with the Duke of Penthurst and recklessly wager (and lose) her virtue. Although the duke doesn’t plan to collect, he keeps Lydia guessing. Then Lydia’s ill-advised attempt to deal with the blackmailer brings Penthurst to the rescue, compromising them both, and suddenly it’s marriage, not simple seduction, that lay ahead. VERDICT A rash, adventure-seeking heroine and an honorable, take-charge hero clash splendidly as passions blaze in this complex story that pairs another marvelously singular couple, brings the bad guys to justice, and cleverly ties up the loose ends...—to the delight of all concerned." --Library Journal

"Fueled by an abundance of subtle wit and potent sensuality, The Accidental Duchess...is another exquisitely crafted love story by one of the romance genre’s masters." --Booklist

Praise for the novels of Madeline Hunter
"Another stellar Regency-set historical romance that hits all the literary marks. Hunter’s effortlessly elegant writing exudes a wicked sense of wit; her characterization is superbly subtle, and the sexual chemistry she cooks up between her deliciously independent heroine and delightfully sexy hero is pure passion."—Booklist (starred review)
"Intelligent and memorable...As smart and sharp as the best of Regency romances can be. With its tangy dialogue, Pride and Prejudice themes, bits of mystery and nefarious characters, readers may be reminded of Jane Austen."—Romantic Times (Top Pick)
“Hunter’s books are so addictive.”—Publishers Weekly
“Hunter's flowery centerpiece will suit every romance table. Highly recommended.”—Library Journal

Much Improved
By arc
This is the last book of the four book series. Of the four, the second book about Cassandra and Ambury, and this one are the best. The previous book (The Counterfeit Mistress) was very disappointing and the characters in that book still annoy even when they appear in this one. The lead characters in this book have moved in and out of the previous three so we are somewhat familiar with them. Lydia was rather unpleasant and bratty and Penthurst eccentric and superior. The characters have filled out considerably and they are interesting, especially Lydia as she attempts to deal alone with the consequences of her own poor choices. Penthurst remains a bit eccentric but given the very young age at which he shouldered large responsibilities, his self possession and (mostly) adherence to the expectations of his class make sense.

One of the things I enjoy about Hunter's work is that she doesn't try to make her period heroes into champions of 21st century gender equality. These men are kind and understanding of their wives frustrations at the limits imposed on them, but that doesn't stop them from exercising their authority and imposing limits of their own. They subscribe to the belief that they have a right and obligation to control their wives behavior for their own good and do sometimes annoyingly treat them like children - and certainly like the dependents they are. Where the women prevail it is usually through manipulation. That might be objectionable from a modern perspective (I wouldn't put up with it!) but makes perfect sense within the context of the time period of the story. There is nothing much more annoying in period romances than plot, dialogue and social and political beliefs and activity that are based firmly in the 2000's. Authors committed to those elements should write modern romances and stay away from historical romance writing.

In some ways, Lydia acts immature for her age and Penthurst is older than his years. The shifting dynamic between the two is believable and the emotional attachment develops slowly for both of them. Both have what appear to be good reasons to resent and dislike the other but they both see advantages to their marriage of necessity and instead of wallowing in self pity and anger try to make the best of the situation. In the end of course (the very end) they are in love.

You can skip books one and three but reading book two before this one will fill in some critical information regarding the conflict between these two - not strictly necessary but helpful.

A Duke Such as Only Madeline Hunter Can Provide
By Coop
I was thrilled when I won an ARC of this book on Ms. Hunter's website drawing, because I am a huge Hunter fan--this is my 24th book of hers that I own, and the first that I didn't pay full price for. This review is geared specifically to her fans. Amidst all the self-pub and drivel that hardly appears edited out here in the romance reader's world, Ms. Hunter's books are always engaging, well-written, plot-driven page-turners. In my book, she can only get a 5-star within the Amazon rating system because if we're comparing her talents to any other romance author out there, she is plainly and totally A-Team. Her books are always readable, enjoyable page-turners, and worth their price in sheer entertainment, romantic value. So 5 Stars is her minimum Amazon Rating.
However, fans might like to know how this book compares to her other works...Madeline Hunter as compared to Madeline Hunter.
The heroine: Lydia is probably the most difficult h that Ms. Hunter has ever written. She is not only dangerously naive, but arrogant about it--which is sometimes difficult for the reader who would like to reach into the pages and shake some sense into her. However, those of us who have read the full Fairbourne Quartet series were completely prepared for this, as she was fully introduced in the previous books. We knew she had some serious growing up to do, and that we were going to watch her do it. Because this was, at times, somewhat painful, Lydia gets 3 stars for common sense and 4 for her plucky attempts to be a plucky woman during a time when pluckiness was neither admired nor encouraged, and 4 for a certain sweetness that she manages to keep, despite occasional stubbornness. Man, it wasn't easy to be a spirited woman back then.
The hero: The Duke of Penthurst is as good a hero as Hunter has ever written. Noble, quietly heroic, with enough rakishness to keep him extremely **attractive**. He gets 6 stars. Maybe 7. Okay, 8, but that's my final offer. The book price is worth it for him alone.
The plot: the unlikely relationship between these two IS the plot, but the threads of subterfuge and treason from the other Quartet novels are continued in this one. Hunter kept these pages turning for me, with (of course) plenty of the extremely romantic interludes that she writes so well. No one writes a love scene like Hunter, and she was generous with them in this one. She kept Lydia from becoming insipid or TSTL, and kept me rooting for her despite her mistakes. As we grow to see Lydia through Penthurst's eyes, we, too, learn to care for and about her.
My final rating: My very favorite Hunter books (The Romantic, Ravishing in Red, The Rules of Seduction) are unequaled still, but I give this one a space on my second tier. I've already reread it once and I know someday it will be dogeared. Must buy the Kindle version now, I suppose, so I won't save money after all, but Hunter is an entertainment bargain regardless. The Accidental Duchess will stand alone perfectly well, but read the whole Fairbourne Quartet, in order, beginning with The Surrender of Miss Fairbourne, to gain maximum enjoyment. (As a side note, I did not enjoy Surrender nearly so well until I'd read all 4 books...this is one set that is truly meant to be enjoyed as a whole series.)

Hated the story; Penthurst deserved a better heroine
By Romantic Heart
I waited for Penthurt's story. In the other books, Penthurst seemed like a mysterious and misunderstood character. I really wanted his love story to be good. He deserved a loving wife because his friends had spurned him in the first two novels of the series.

Lydia, the heroine, was a complete idiot. She had a loving brother and loving husband, and yet, she wouldn't seek their help. I don't normally like stories about blackmail because they can be easily solved. Why would anyone pay tons of money (10,000 pounds which was a boatload of money for that time period) for a novel? The blackmail plot was a weak contrivance and I was not convinced that any harm could have been done. Sure there were lists of ships and she could have been seen as a spy...but have your brother or ducal husband help you out of this mess, you dumb bunny! Furthermore, Lydia never asked for the blackmailer to prove that he actually had the entire novel. Meanwhile, it irked me that Lydia kept paying money without any proof that he had the entire novel.

Additionally, Penthurst was a duke and he could have overpowered the blackmailer. He could have shot the blackmailer in a duel, or arrested the blackmailer and Penthurst could have used his ducal influence to put the blackmailer in jail for life. End of stupid blackmail plot. End of stupid blackmailer.

Also, Lydia was supposed to be a "woman of the world" and yet she was subservient to this blackmailer. She pretended to be worldly, but she was a naive, spoiled brat. I don't know what Penthurst saw in her. He gained nothing from his association with her. He deserved a strong woman who could support his strengths and promote his good reputation. Instead he was shackled with an embarrassing spoiled wife. I waded through 4 novels to see Penthurst vindicated. What a disappointment.
