Views into the Chinese Room: New Essays on Searle and Artificial IntelligenceFrom Clarendon Press

The most famous challenge to computational cognitive science and artificial intelligence is the philosopher John Searle's "Chinese Room" argument. Searle argued that, although machines can be devised to respond to input with the same output as would a mind, machines--unlike minds--lack understanding of the symbols they process. 19 essays by leading scientists and philosophers assess, renew, and respond to this crucial challenge.

Review
Searle fans will not be disappointed ... The editors have produced a genuinely interdisciplinary volume, which should stand for some time as the book to read on the Chinese room argument. John Preston has also written an excellent introduction, so newcomers to the debate will find themselves well prepared for the essays which follow. The Philosophers' Magazine Produced to mark the 21st birthday of the Chinese Room and bears witness to the argument's continuing fascination ... kicks off with an excellent introduction ... This is an excellent gathering of scholars. Times Higher Education Supplement

Ignore the previous comments on "trick philosophy"
By R.U.R.
The Chinese Room Argument (CRA) has nothing to do with the speed of computers or any future developments in artifical intelligence (at least as understood as following from Turing). The CRA is a purely formal argument intended to refute the claim that computers (defined as Turing machines) can think, or can understand, or are minds solely by virtue of their formal description. (This claim is the essence of "computationalism," after Turing's original formulation.) The CRA is that: 1) Syntax is not semantics. 2) The implemented synatactical or formal program of a computer is not sufficient to generate semantics. 3) Minds have semantics. 4) Therefore, computers (so defined) are not minds/cannot think/do not understand because they are not sufficient to generate semantics.

For example, the concepts we employ to think and the words we use to speak have meanings. But there is nothing in computationalism as syntax that has any meaning whatsoever. Whatever meaning an implemented formal program has results from its being programmed or interpreted by us. Syntax (e.g., a computer program) has no causal powers. Whatever causal powers computers have (e.g., to fly airplanes) results from our programming and our assigning interpretations to the electrical charge insides a chip, not from the program in itself.

The chapters in Views Into the Chinese Room attack different aspects of the CRA. But they address it as an argument that stands or falls on the truth of the premises and the validity of the inference, not on engineering questions such as the speed of computers, which are irrelevant. Searle believes that there are, in fact, thinking machines -- we human beings are biological machines that think. And he believes that there also could be artificially made machines that think. The CRA is meant to show only that an implemented computer program by itself cannot generate mental content or semantic content.

For a clear explanation of the CRA, see chapter 15 of this book, by Stevan Harnad, the editor of The Behavioral and Brain Sciences, where Searle's original paper appeared twenty years ago. Do not rely on reviewers who do not understand the argument in the first place.

The Chinese Room Syndrome
By Tojagi
This book isn't as much about 'how computers think' as it is about how computer scientists think - and feel.

On page 52 John Searle states that CRA (Chinese Room Argument) rests on two "fundamental logical truths":

1.) Syntax is not semantics (An English speaker could learn to recite passages from the Koran in Arabic yet have no understanding of their meaning.)

2.) Simulation is not duplication (A computer program could simulate digestion but that doesn't mean it could digest a pizza and beer.)

That's it! It just doesn't seem like rocket science to me. And I've never seen such a battle of straw men. Straw man 1: the Turing test proves human consciousness; straw man 2: CRA proves that machines can't think; straw man 3: computation is not part of our cognitive process - and so on. Professor Searle said in a lecture that it took him five minutes to develop this little thought experiment. So what's all the fuss about? I think I found the answer on page 295:

"One of the charges that had been laid against Searle by his critics had been that his wrong-headed critique had squelched funding for Artificial Intelligence..." - Stevan Harnad (p295)

I have no idea what goes on in academia with research funding and all. But I have a sneaking suspicion that this is the source of much of the hyperbole about `thinking machines'.

Terry Winograd, computer scientist at Stanford, uses the postmodern technique to counter Searle's argument. The meaning of the word `understand', he claims, is a social construction. Therefore it is erroneous to believe that there is a right or wrong answer to the question: does the computer `understand' the language it is using?

"The error is not one of flawed logic in the argument about artificial intelligence, but is more fundamental and more pervasive. It has to do with the basic orientation we take towards the truth or falsity of statements in natural language." - Terry Winograd (p80)

On page 94 one of the editors of this book, John Preston, questions Winograd:

JP: "You say that all uses of the term `understand' and its cognates depend on certain concerns and perspectives. Isn't there a problem of self-reflexion here? Mustn't it be that your own uses of those terms are right only for certain concerns and from certain perspectives, but wrong for and from others?"

TW: "You correctly point out that if I am to be consistent in being relativistic, then I must apply it to my own statements as well as to the ones I am analyzing. Indeed, my own evaluations of attitudes are matters of social construction that is not the same as individual subjective opinion, but is grounded in the social discourse rather than in an appeal to objective truth." - Terry Winograd (p94)

What I see here is a person operating at the very, very highest level of academia resorting to the typical California postmodern response, `It's all relative man.' It's comical. Like a father saying, `Don't you try to tell me my baby doesn't understand English.'

Nevertheless, this book explores one of the most fascinating philosophical questions of our time: will we someday be able to build machines like ourselves that will replicate human consciousness? Considering the enormity of that question, it is no wonder the overwhelming response to Searle's CRA has sometimes taken on the character of religious passion.

Mistitled book
By Robert Stevenson
Unfortunately, the phrase "Java Native Interfaces" is in large letters and "with SWT/JFace" are in a much smaller font. It should have been the other way around because the complex subject of JNI is barely touched on here. I cannot comment on the SWT/JFace coverage because that was not my object, but if you are looking for a book that will tell you how to put C++ and Java code together, this one probably won't help.

Perfect for most people IMHO
By Slavisa Nesic
I have compared this book to three others: "SWT JFace in action" (ed. Manning), "SWT: the standard widget toolkit" (ed. A. Wesley) and "The Definitive Guide to SWT and JFace" (ed. Apress). Of all these books I greatly prefer this book. All four books have similar approach, they are all acceptable for learning, but something have been better with Professional Java Native Interface with SWT/JFace.

When analyzing what that can be, I have come to the this. Li Guojie book have appropriate and very fine measure when, what and how much to present you the information. All in all he manages to enter your first program and puts it to use faster then other books, giving you earlier some starting confidence and getting you the feeling "this works for real", which is very much needed both for beginners and experienced folks. Sometimes Guojie book misses to offer information from other books, for example it does not have the typed events in table easily readable form, or it seems to be somewhat less comprehensive then the others. But it also seems to be the most practical. Maybe Li Guojie book is somewhat like situation: you ask an experienced engineer about something and he talks to you exactly what is important and stresses the right peaces of information for you. This book shows what happens when both professional and teaching abilities meats together in one person: Li Guojie.
It is quite possible that personal preference of his writing style has misguided my judgment to grade this book with 5 stars. Even than I should say all four books are excellent, but my vote goes to Li Guojie.

Practical advice: combine this book with "The Definitive Guide to SWT and JFace" to get the best of all worlds. You will appreciate me a lot for this advice!

Covers the basics, after that you're on your own
By Glenn Holliday
Very little information is available about using JFace. This book, like many others, gives a good beginning, but does not go beyond the beginner tutorials available from IBM and other places. The big advantage of this book over learning from free tutorials on the Web is that a consistent explanation of all the basics of JFace are here in one place. By flipping back and forth, I constructed a better overview in my mind than I had from working individual tutorials.

This book is not enough by itself to get beyond a beginner level. None of the books I have found discuss how to use the event model when you have more than a few objects to juggle, or how to communicate data between the a GUI and the other parts of a large application. By reading this book and SWT/JFace in Action: GUI Design with Eclipse 3.0 (In Action series) side by side, I got a better picture of the JFace event model than from either book alone. I noticed that both books say something about the Model-View-Controller pattern, but do not fully explain how that differs from what is provided in JFace, SWT, and related Java frameworks. JFace contains many other aspects, such as its Help system, that this book does not cover. The pages in the index of my copy were misordered. I notice the publisher, Wrox, says this book is printed on demand.

In my opinion both this and SWT/JFace in Action: GUI Design with Eclipse 3.0 (In Action series) are superior to the third easy-to-find book on JFace, The Definitive Guide to SWT and JFACE.

BONUS MATERIAL: Albert & Laurin's Story.

"Trust is the most important thing between husband and wife. If you cannot trust your husband with your heart, your life, or your love, nothing else matters … only give the sword to your husband if you can trust him with all these things."

As a child, Josephine MacAdams had dutifully memorized her mother’s —words even if she didn’t quite understand what they meant. For years, Josephine kept the secrets handed down through generations of DeReyne women. Now that her betrothed of more than four years has finally come for her, she must decide if he is not only worthy of her heart, but also of the ancient sword. Will Graeme MacAulay prove worthy or will Josephine have to keep the sword hidden for another generation?

But that is not her only worry. She loves her sister-of the-heart, Laurin, who cannot escape the horrors of her past. Illegitimate, abandoned by her mother, and sorely abused by her laird, Laurin’s only hope of ever being free lies in the hands of a man she has just met – Albert MacAulay. Never one to loosen his purse strings, much to the surprise of all who know him, he pays for her freedom. But what will he expect in return?

Suzan has a big winner in this book
By Cathy Phillips
When Josephine MacAdams was 9 years old, her sweet and gentle mother died from the wasting disease. She was left at the mercy of her cruel brother, Helmert, and her disinterested father, Delmer. Before she died, her mother left her with the Gladius: a sword that was passed down from mother to daughter. It was said to be cursed, and only given to a husband if he proved trust worthy, kind, and loved her. She had met Graeme MacAulay three times as she was growing up, hiding from her cruel brother, Helmert. When Delmer was going to betroth Josephine to an unacceptable man, Graeme's father talked him into a betrothal between Graeme and Josephine (or Joie, as she was known to those who loved her). Graeme was furious when he learned he would have no choice in a bride when he received the letter from his father. He waited until almost the last moment (before the 6th of June, when Joie would turn 19 years old, and the betrothal would be broken). Joie and her friend (sister of the heart), Laurin, were waiting for the MacAdams men to come save them from Helmert and his horrible and cruel friends. This story is about Joie and Graeme and Graeme's brother, Albert, and Laurin. There are lots of twists and turns in this story.

Suzan has outdone herself with this book. That is a difficult thing to say since she is an excellent writer, and has never written a bad story. Please get this book. You definitely won't be sorry. Enjoy!

At Last!
By MSPS
At last!!!! Isle of the Blessed by Suzan Tisdale is a sweet tale of two young women who have both been severely violated, in different ways, but the violations have the same effect, the loss of one's sense of security, self worth, or ego integrity, and their loss of trust in those who have authority over them. Suzan was able to portray the abuse and the effects in a fairly simple way, yet she was complete, and retained my interest.
This story begins, with one lonely little girl (Josephine or Joie) typically running and hiding from her brother, and a young man named Graeme who while visiting with his father, watches Joie as she hides from her brother's retribution for some sort of offense. Joie's antics captivate the reader right from the start! Over the years Graeme and his father return to visit and each time it is to find a similar situation. But Graeme is a young man who is full of dreams and aspirations of his own, so while he notices the brother/sister conflict, he doesn't ignore it so much, as attribute it to typical sibling behavior, nothing pernicious or alarming, or enough to cause him concern.
Soon, Joie's mother becomes ill but before she dies, she secretly bequeathed Joie with a sword which has an ancient, mysterious history. She is adamant with Joie, making sure that Joie follows her instructions to the letter as to the disposition of the sword. And in the meantime, Graeme is off to investigate the world, never thinking twice about Joie.
Graeme is a young man, the baby of the family, who like all young, handsome men desires only to taste the pleasures, and treats of life. He believes himself very intelligent, handsome, talented, and has a well developed sense of entitlement. Each of these character traits designs a construct of how Graeme sees himself, his role in life and the type of woman who will complement his importance, a woman worthy of him. Graeme knows he will eventually marry but is not yet ready to surrender himself to adulthood and it's overwhelming responsibilities. So, one can imagine Graeme's shock when he is informed that he is now betrothed, and is ordered to marry by a specific date. To add insult to injury, the bride is none other than little Josephine who does not remotely fit Graeme's concept of a worthy bride. In fact she is the very opposite of what is acceptable to him, and so the war is begins! Graeme is going to do everything within his power to avoid this betrothal and nearly succeeds.
During the years of Graem's procrastination, Joie had sent Graeme frequent letters to further acquaint themselves but he never bothers to open and read them. Despite Graeme's protests, and malingering, the young couple is eventually reunited.
The second bride of the story is a lovely young woman whom Joie calls her "heart sister" and she has her own love story neatly interwoven throughout the threads of Joie's. Their lives, abuses, healing and loves are adeptly twined together so as to complement the story, without bogging it down. And the best, rest of the story shall be yours to discover readers. I always like just enough information to titillate myself as the story unfolds and so I shall leave you here, titillated and interested, on the verge of discovery as to what could possibly make this book so special.
My primary reason for writing this review is that many major authors are now writing what seems to be hurried attempts to satisfy the publisher, much like revamping an old story, throwing in a few sex scenes, or some way to adjust it and get it to the public quickly. But Tisdale continues to present readers an excellent story/s that reflects the effects of the loss of a parent, the abandonment of another, physical, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse. She portrays the growth and development of a young man who has an inflated self-esteem yet who eventually reconciles that part of himself to adulthood and it's subsequent responsibilities. And, she does this in a limited number of pages, which is amazing when one is trying to portray emotional trauma, and healing. Suzan presented readers with clean, fresh likable characters, a realistic setting, and a believable, story line. The story had movement and did not bog down, and it captured my interest from the beginning, thru each page to the end. Wow! This is exactly what I look for in a book! Tisdale restores my faith in authors, and affirms my belief that they can still tell good fresh stories. It appeared that the story flowed effortlessly from her fingers to the page.
This work was well edited, spelling was correct, words were used correctly in appropriate places. My only valid complaint of Tisdale is the length of time between her books. Suzan Tisdale-Salute!

Great quick read.
By MAJ
Isle of the Blessed is another hit for Suzan Tisdale. It is a quick read but just as good as the longer books. It has lots of emotion and action, just my kind of book. I highly recommend to anyone and everyone that they read it, you will be glad you did.

What a Treat! Hard to put it down.
By BukLover
Johnston McCulley is a hard act to follow. As the Creator of El Zorro, he's the champ, the master. However, these authors of Tales of Zorro do a commendable job as keepers of the flame. This book is a real treat for any Zorro fan, whether you love Guy Williams, Duncan Regehr, or Antonio Banderas, among others, in the role.
Seventeen all new stories about the adventures of Zorro are a mix of many versions from McCulley's written word to movies to Television, some written in such a graphic way you can easily imagine them as half hour TV shows much like Disney's Zorro. Some are more inventive than others, some with a unique point of view. While several are stand outs two in particular are exceptional: "Winds of Change" by Richard Dean Starr for suspense, creativity, understanding of the character, and the vernacular of McCulley, and "Colors Seen By Candlelight" by Peter David for imagination, action, romance, and a clever twist. The bold illustrations by the internationally renown Rubn Procopio are a wonderful added bonus.
There is something here for every Zorro fan. If you love the character you will love Tales of Zorro.

needs proofing--full of typos and grammatical errors
By Linda
I am a huge Zorro fan, but when I pay full price for a new book, I expect it to be proofed before it is printed. I can read fanfiction online for free if I don't mind overlooking grammatical errors and typos. This book is full of typos and it is so disturbing that I haven't finished reading all the stories. I have most of the stories read but there are a few yet I haven't read. Out of the stories I have read, there are a few pretty good ones and some that are pretty mediocre and at least one I thought was terrible.

Don't believe for a minute that Isabelle Allende contributed any stories to this book. She wrote an "Afterword" for this book which is about why she wrote her book, "Zorro." One story, "The Weeping Woman" by Greg Cox is worthwhile.

I prefer Johnston McCulley's Zorro (since he created Zorro) and the Disney Zorro was based on those stories. These stories are mostly based on other Zorro creations--like Allende's and New World Zorro.

There are a lot of people who collect all kinds of Zorro memorabilia and will have to have this book just to add to their collection.

Tales of Zorro...Great
By Tim Lasiuta
"The Fox" has been around a lonnng time. The "Curse of Capistrano" introduced the world to Zorro. Johnston McCulley penned the legendary tale in 1918, and it took little time for Hollywood (Douglass Fairbanks) to bring him to the silent screen as the 2nd `hero' taken from popular media. (Tarzan was the first in 1918).

From that time forward, Zorro has always been in the public eye. Don Diego de La Vega has appeared in pulp magazines (McCulley), comic books (Disney, Dell, Dynamite, Gold Key, Marvel), paperbacks and hardcovers, TV (Disney, New World, new series, Filmation), and the BIG screen. Costumes, statues, and hundred s of licensed goods have borne the Zorro name. When once McCulley owned the character, Disney, then now Zorro Productions under the watchful eye of Sandra Curtis and John Gertz have been faithful guardians.

Today, Moonstone Books is the proud publisher of Zorro fiction while Dynamite publishes the Wagner/Francovilla comic book. Tales was a labor of love, and the results speak for themselves.

Sculptor Ruben Procopio supplied inspired artwork for the interior of the book while Doug Klauba and Martinez supplied excellent covers. The book includes 17 NEW pieces of fiction by writers such as Peter David, Jeff Marriotte, Robin Wayne Bailey, Greg Cox, Nancy Holdner, Elizabeth Massie, Jan Adkins, Loren Estelman, Ed Gorman, and Max Allan Collins.
The book is fantastic. Each author interprets Zorro a slightly different way, yet each story could be a TV episode unto itself.

Fans of heroic fiction will love this book. All ages will appreciate the talent and obvious love for the character. Moonstone Books is to be congratulated on this historical volume!
