In addressing the essential question of the intrinsic value of the natural world Rolston is laying the groundwork for a new understanding of humanity's place in the world. Beginning with the simple premise of responsibility, Rolston argues that it is the duty of all humans by virtue of our existence as reasoning beings to protect and conserve the biodiversity and environmental health of the plant. This vital responsibility is intended to inform, not only for our relationship to the world vis a vis own consumptive needs, but in a way that enriches the existential potential of, not only all other forms of life, but the nonsentient ecosystem as well, i.e., mountains, sky, rivers, oceans, earth and rock.
The importance of this kind of radical subjectivity is that it represents the necessary acknowledgement of the interconnectivity of all being. You may be asking yourself, but what does this mean to me as an individual, and why should I care about deforestation taking place in a remote part of the world? The answer Rolston, puts forth is both complex and elegant, in which he argues that the individual values of nature cannot be isolated, due to the inherent connectivity, in a simple pragmatic approach to life. Because since the earth is one great system of interrelationships, with all of the individual constituents relying upon the others in order to function. Thus, if one part is disturbed or destroyed, for example the elimination of predators such as wolves and bears in a forest, there are serious repercussions that will eventually effect the entire ecosystem from, from the overpopulation of deer, increased spread of disease, loss of habitat due to overgrazing, which results in increased starvation of wildlife and the eventual loss of biotic diversity. These are things that are not apparent at a glance, nonetheless they do represent some of the most serious problems facing the health of the Earth, and it is precisely these nondescript consequences that makes understanding these relationships so important.

About the Author

Dr. NANCY BONVILLAIN received her Ph.D. in anthropology from Columbia University in 1972, with specializations in linguistics and in Native American cultures.� She has carried out fieldwork in the Navajo Nation in Arizona and extensive linguistic fieldwork at the Akwesasne Mohawk Reserve in Ontario/Quebec, beginning in 1969.� There she began the efforts to develop materials for language maintenance programs, completing her dissertation (A Grammar of Akwesasne Mohawk) and working with community members on dictionaries and conversations.

�

Dr. Bonvillain has taught on the undergraduate and graduate levels in several universities including Michigan State University and the State University of New York at Stonybrook.� She taught in the summer session of Columbia University from 1982 until 2008.� She currently teaches anthropology and linguistics at Bard College at Simon’s Rock where she is also the Director of the Tutoring and Writing Center.

Dr. Bonvillain has published numerous articles on topics in Mohawk linguistics and Iroquoian ethnohistory.� She has written seventeen books in the North American Indian cultures and histories series published by Chelsea House.� And she has written four textbooks published by Prentice-Hall, including Language, Culture, and Communication (currently in its 6th edition), Women and Men: Cultural Constructs of Gender (4th edition), Native Nations: Cultures and Histories of Native North America, and Cultural Anthropology (3rd edition in press).

Interesting

I enjoyed reading the topics and it covered so many aspects of various cultures thoroughly. I was also taking a sociology class at the time and that class and book had nothing on this one -- I will definitely remember what I learned from this book. It was all very relevant in understanding how our culture is set up and why we have the points of view that we have, and how and why other cultures are different (although that seems like the obvious intention of a cultural anthropology book, my sociology book was also supposed to glean similar insight but failed miserably, whereas this book did a thorough and good job of it).

I didn't think the book was long-winded or confusing -- those opinions probably have something to do with either the class or one's opinion of the subject.

It references native american cultures a lot -- because they're so varied, it's interesting, but it seems the author had a particular love of them (though it doesn't detract from the text, and many, many other cultures are referenced, also).

I think if you read this book and understand the implications of it, you'll be able to better understand what being a human is really comprised of and will probably walk away more open-minded and tolerant.

Also, I have a custom edition book for my school that has the same name and author and year but a different cover -- I'm assuming has the same general information, whether or not the format is the same.

Textbok - but really learned a lot

Great Text for an anthropology class! I bought it because it was mandatory, but I found myself actually wanted to read from it. Presented well, and I learned a lot. Great examples and description were given to really help wrap your mind around the ideas. it's hard living in today's society in the U.S. and imagining some of these examples, but the book does a great job of really letting you into other societies! One of the few text I enjoyed reading

Not for an expert, not for a beginner

TL;DR - go directly to the conclusion.

This book is really weird. It shows since the beginning its nature, as stated by the book itself: a cookbook. A set of recipes to do something effectively, one would expect. It is, instead, a series of examples of how replicating some pretty old attack in a pretty bad manner. The reasons why I say this?

- the code is bad:
- it looks like "the Python antipattern cookbook", that is "how not to code in Python" (too long list of examples here, but some: exception handling generally absent and when present it's a "catch-all", namespace pollution, old-style classes)
- it completely ignores best practices, code reuse, multithreading, isolation, synchronization, good design
- the attacks are very old:
- everything you learn in this book is pointless nowadays
- the rationale and explanations are generally absent:
- it doesn't explain why something is done in that way: it just goes "we do this, and this, and this, et voil�!". The consequence is that it's useless for a beginner since he can't learn anything new, and it's useless for an expert, since it's too basic to be useful
- there's no troubleshooting at all: what if something doesn't work out of the box? Users reported non-working scripts from the book
- it doesn't explain why we're choosing a library instead of another, a single statement "it's faster", "it's more reliable", "I like it" is better than nothing
- it doesn't explain how those libraries work, what can be really done, how to exploit their potential for our use
- every example is self-contained and can't be easily reused: it doesn't help building an arsenal
- it does poor use of the plethora of Python-based security tools out there
- attacks are not optimized for parallelism: the Python has the GIL, that renders pretty useless the threading module. But also, it has the multiprocessing approach that can circumvent this problem. Unfortunately the author never uses or mention it

Someone may say that "security people" shouldn't waste time with programming practices, but that's wrong. Security researchers have always been good programmers by need, and still are. If the code is bad and the attacks are less than practical, what's the point?

On the other hand, a good point: the Forensics Investigation chapter is pretty good. Also, if I understood correctly, it has been written by a different contributing author.

I wouldn't buy it again, and, no, I am not happy of the money I spent. It wasn't even cheap.

Not perfect, but still a must read.

Not perfect, but still a "must read." The content is already a little dated and some examples are simplistic, but the majority of real-word hacks involve simple things and dumb stuff. This book is a great starting point. I'm hoping there will be a second edition.

Violent Python Libraries

Violent python is an introductory level book on python with a introductory look at security concepts in general. It is great for those who are new to the language and would like example use cases of simplistic security tools, but not for those who want to understand Python, deeply understand the security concepts covered, or using python for reliable tools.

Problems I had:

1.) This book is about python libraries and interacting with them and other programs. It is not about understanding the attack and implementing them in Python. Sure, some may be required for ease to the beginner when it comes to forensics, communicating with ssh, or integrating with other tools for complex protocols like SMB, but anything else is really not fair to those who may not be able to use the library, who have problems and need to understand why, or those who want to understand what is happening on a lower level. Examples:

1a.) Use ftplib for your ftp bruteforcer.
1b.) Use zipfile to crack zip archives.
1c.) Use os to send metasploit exploit code (your own 'conficker')/os to use msfpayload to bypass a/v.
1d.) Use smtplib to communicate with smtp (regardless of the functions being ironically similiar to the real commands).

The problem with this is it doesn't teach you how these libraries work. For example, one should show the person how to interact with FTP with the sockets library, what to send, what to look for, and then show them the easy libraries. As previosly stated, it also doesn't prepare them for issues (like programs that don't like complying with rfc standards).

2.) More exception handling. The socket code is not helpfully handled on all stages of attempted connection. Debugging why something isn't working for a beginner is going to be a nightmare especially later on for point 3. He talks about exception handling, but integrates it very loosely. This plays into many people's issues on other sites with the author's script quality. Good exception handling or even print statements should be covered if you're going to be teaching a new person and something breaks on them.

3.) Thread safety doesn't seem to be an issue that's handled. Because of the GIL (global interpreter lock) threads can not expand cores when using cython (the default python interpreter). This means that you have a thread limit on the process/core and this causes problems for speed and for thread handling when you start really using it. When doing a portscan or communicating to a server with threads, the host or port may go down, you may get blocked, etc. and the thread can die. It becomes a huge problem especially because it doesn't maintain state and doesn't resend a failed attempt. But violent python libraries strike again and you'll just integrate nmap scans for your portscans anyway.

Well, with the issues out of the way, let's talk about what this book does well. I do believe that the forensics sections of this book are good. The descriptions are more in-depth and I've always seen forensics as "what do I have in my toolbag", which makes sense when bringing in all of the thirdparty libraries for the forensics sections. Then it gets down to using scapy. Once he starts using scapy, everything is much more informative due to the level and quality of information. No longer are you using a library for....logging into an ftp server, but you start crafting and analyzing packets raw packets. This allows a much needed understanding of what is happening in the script and with the packets/network at the same time.

The Pin-Up is a history book with an artistic flare. Through well written text and 100's of photos, Mark Gabor describes the history of a pop icon; the pin-up girl. From Cheescake to fetish it's all described in accurate detail.

Good Reference

People would be surprised to see and know just how many of the "new" models and poses are not really new at all. This is a great archive of examples of nearly all the erotic genre we know today, yet as a historical reference or origin. ANYONE interested in photography in any of the "Glamour" genres should have, and read this book.

Great Book!

I first came across this book before at a used bookstore and bought it right on the spot.
Sadly, I lost the book and so have searched for a good while to get another copy of it so I was very pleased to see Amazon offering it.
This book is full of mostly black and white photos and gives the history of the pinup, both female and male. The pics of the men tend to be of famous actors while the women in the pics are largely unknown.
I found this book to be somewhat erotic in nature and would highly recommend it, especially if you are interested in the history of nude photography.

I would strongly recommend Ian Dunt's excellent guide to what happens next.

Dunt has taken the extraordinary step of asking a set of experts what they think about matters of law.

This is one of the few books of the set to face forwards rather than backwards and it is all the better for that. I learnt a lot, which I find often happens when I have the humility to listen to experts.

It is likely in the so called echo chambers that selectively this book would be both widely toasted or roundly scorned. And that's where this book must live as a warning or a guide. As call to sense and not just a post truth fantasy. Use reason as you seek knowledge and not meaningless phrases that brexit means.

Bernardo Atxaga was born in Gipuzkoa, Spain, in 1951 and lives in the Basque Country, writing in Basque and Spanish. He is a prizewinning novelist and poet whose books include The Accordionist's Son, The Lone Man, and The Lone Woman.

Written by Bernardo Atxaga, a contemporary author who writes in euskera, the language of the Basque country, Obabakoak is alternately called a novel and a short story collection. Too loose to fit the definition of a novel for most people, it still has some repeating characters, and the ending of the book depends on the reader's careful notice of details among the stories at the beginning. The integration of the beginning and the end make this a more connected group of offbeat stories than one usually sees.

Set in Obaba in the Basque country, the book allows myth and magic to overlap with theological questions in a story about a poor, ignored, and lonely boy who may or may not have turned into a white boar, which attacks and kills the cruelest people in the village and terrifies the priest. Animism adds pleasure to the life of an eleven-year-old girl living in the most remote corner of the village, as she walks with her grandfather, saying hello to the bat Gordon, her dog Toby, her horse Kent, and Frankie the chicken. In other stories, a nine-year-old boy meets a man who cannot stop talking and cannot function because his memories are so vivid, and then later meets an old friend in a psychiatric hospital who has had electroshock treatment and now has no memories at all. A young boy is seduced by the village teacher, frustrated because she has not heard from her lover at home, wantonly destroying the boy's life.

Angels appear and disappear, dreams and nightmares become real, and characters becomes incarnations of the devil. While religion seems to inform the lives of the characters, religion here is a cultural characteristic built from the stories the characters have shared from their own lives, and not a religion based on external doctrine. The deaths, and even murders, which are at the root of many of these stories are often attributed more to fate or superstition than to any sense of religious destiny, and as the stories of these deaths are repeated a village heritage and history are formed.

The second half of the book, "In Search of the Last Word," consists of many very short stories, most of them traditional plots common to other parts of the world, and as Atxaga develops these stories, the characters also talk about writing and what stories tell about the culture and the characters who tell and retell them. One section, entitled "How to Write a Story in Five Minutes," a playful and teasing examination of the creative process, is hilarious, while another, "How to Plagiarize," gets into the ironies and humor of developing themes that have existed for generations. The conclusion will leave the reader with a huge smile of recognition as old characters come back for an encore, not necessarily pleasant.

Ultimately, "Life," however, "is a journey full of difficulties in which Chance and Free Will intervene in equal measure, a journey, in which, despite those difficulties...it is possible to advance and safely reach that final pond where the Great Mother Goose awaits us." Stories within stories within stories take the reader on dozens of journeys to discover new places, new and strange characters, and old themes seen in new incarnations. And the book is really fun!
