Why couldn't all his books have been like this?

Apparently Lewis didn't become disillusioned and embittered until after 1919, when this absolutely delightful book was published. We have an original copy that my mom got from a library sale or something. She loved it, I loved it, which is no suprise because I am a sucker for sweet old novels, but the most ringing endorsement it that my impossible-to-please dad loved it. In fact, he was the one who made me read it.
There really isn't a lot of substance to this book - it's mostly fluff. (There's some social commentary in the later parts of the book, when they're in Seattle, but I try to ignore it.) But it's grade-A, high-quality fluff we're talking about here. Claire Boltwood's transformation from a Brooklyn snob to a real woman is highly believable, and Milt Daggett is one of the sweetest, most wholesome men ever created. Set against the well-painted backdrop of the American West, the story shifts from amusing to heartwarming to bittersweet and back again flawlessly.
Just a good, simple love-story, unique and well-written. I would recommend this book to anyone just looking for a good read.

unpaved roads, flat tires and chasing that dream

Sinclair Lewis's FRESH AIR, published in 1919, is sheer, chuckling delight. It offers no great insights into psyches or interpersonal relations. Read it rather as a straightforward magazine serial pot boiler romance of frontier boy and car mechanic (Milt Daggett) pursuing a sentimental girl (Claire Boltwood) worth an impressive $5,000 around 1916. The girl, a high living Brooklynite, is driving her ailing workaholic father in a heavy Gomez-Dep roadster long day after weary day across northern plains and mountains towards a vacation with cousins in Seattle. One of my favorite books. I was lucky to get a copy (original edition) from the New York Public Library. Have read all his well-known books, but might like this best. His usual themes of Americana, social climbing, etc. But this is a "road" book and a very innocent love story - wonderful book by one of the best American writers. I'm surprised it's in print since it's such a minor title of his.

Another Great One

I am a huge New Species fan. I have read the whole series. Although this one would not be my favorite, I thought it was great to have two stories in one and that it had so many old characters in it. If you have read the series, this is a must read.

In 140, Morn doesn’t believe that talking to a human female will help him heal and in 927, Hero comes face to face with his past in these riveting New Species romances.

Both stories are fast paced, smooth flowing and tug at the reader’s heart but both stories are very different in their overall plots. Like all of the stories in this series, the emotional turmoil flows with vivid intensity from every page and the reader can’t help but empathize and get caught up in them while the sizzling chemistry between the couples heats up the pages with scorching hot sex scenes. The Characters are strong, compelling and demand the reader’s attention from the very beginning while the intriguing events draws readers in and refuses to let go.

On a visit to Homeland, Dana meets Mourn who she’s instantly drawn to but due to grief from the past, both are hesitant about beginning a relationship which keeps emotions high and expectation building as the story progresses and don’t worry there’s quite a bit of turbulent excitement provided by family members while they try to work things out. Candi wants revenge for the male she lost and her only hope is to reach Homeland but upon arrival she learns that things aren’t what she thought which causes quite a bit of uproar and excitement as Hero tries to process what’s happening which also causes Candi and Hero quite a bit of tension building emotional distress and Candi’s circumstances also has the FBI visiting again.

While each of the stories are shorter on an individual basis and I usually like the longer stories that give me more time with the characters, getting two stories in one book works out well too, because I get more characters to love and more time to spend with New Species on the whole. Both of these stories had my complete attention from beginning to end and captured my heart and as usual I can’t wait for the next book.

Dana is visiting her brother Paul at Homeland when Mourn is brought in to be treated from a terrible fight. When she learns Mourn is purposely causing the fights instead of dealing with the loss of his mate, she steps in and tries to help him. Struggling with loss of her husband too, Dana and Mourn bond over the loss of loved ones and how to move forward. When Mourn decides he wants Dana as his mate, he goes after her with a single-minded intensity the New Species are well known for.
There's angst, comedy-the scene with Mourn and his future mother in law was hysterical- and a sweetness to the relationship I wasn't expecting. Overall, this was a fun and enjoyable read.

Book 15
927

Candi is human. At a very young age, her dad tries to cover up his crime of killing her mother by placing her in a room with 927 (aka Hero) with the intent of using her in experiments with the New Species imprisoned in the lab. When Hero refuses to kill Candi and instead befriends her, a relationship blossoms eventually turning from friendship to love. Of course, there's a big misunderstanding leaving Candi and Hero believing each other died. Fast forward years later..Hero (he's the canine who helped Tammy in Valiant's book) has been rescued and is living in Homeland while Candi has escaped from an asylum where she's been kept under lock and key. When she shows up at Homeland and they discover they're both still alive, life gets quite interesting, both inside and outside Homeland. Especially when the police have a warrant for Candi on murder charges...

In this novella, a lot of characters from previous books make an appearance..sometimes with hilarious results! After the angsty beginning, things pick up speed and transition to an entertaining read as everyone tries to help the new couple adjust while protecting one of their own. I had a few minor issues with the storyline, but overall 927 was a good read.

It's great to finally have a tsumeshogi book in English! The puzzles are very simple; flipping through it, I haven't found one that I couldn't solve at a glance. I think this would be a great book for beginners, which is a good thing since it's the only tsume book available right now in English. My only complaint is that Mr. Davis calls it "Japanese Chess" instead of shogi in the title.

Not Quite What Japanese Call "Tsume-shogi" But Is Good for Shogi Beginners

Tsume puzzle is Japanese chess counterpart of checkmate puzzle in Chess, In Japan tsume books are often regarded as art works rather than practice drills. The standard to be recognized as good Tsume-shogi is a lot more complicated than what the tsume books in Japanese say. Tsume problem in Page 81 for instance, Japanese tsume books simply state one solution disregarding the other two which are too simple. As a Japanese I do not know the reason why. But the plausible answers could be one of the move must have "great one" not easily found. First half of the problems are a bit too easy for even kyu level Japanese chess players but as the moves become large-numbered it will be much more difficult.

While the move difficulty is not that much, it may not be good for true beginners because the book gives only solutions and not
commenting enough why the particular solution is best. In Japanese tsume book almost one page is set aside for one to two tsume problems with comprehensive diagrams. For the next tsume book I suggest the author seek professional help from real Japanese tsume books writers for the quality of the problems as well as comprehensive comments with diagrams for kyu-level players.

Verdict: Good workbooks of Japanese Chess
Rating: 80 out of 100. It needs a lot more comprehensive comments. Also the problems need technical "proofreading" to improve the quality of tsume problems.
