About the Author

Philip B. Bedient is the Herman Brown Professor of Engineering, with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Rice University, Houston, TX. He received the Ph.D. degree in environmental engineering sciences from the University of Florida. He is a registered professional engineer and teaches and performs research in surface hydrology, modeling, and flood prediction systems, and ground water hydrology. He has directed over 50 research projects over the past 31 years, and has written over 180 journal articles and conference proceedings over that time. He has also written four textbooks in the area of surface and groundwater hydrology. He received the Shell Distinguished Chair in environmental science (1988–92), the C.V. Theis award in 2007, and he was elected Fellow of ASCE in 2006. Dr. Bedient has worked on a variety of hydrologic problems, including river basin analyses, major floodplain studies, groundwater contamination models, and hydrologic/GIS models in water resources. He has been actively involved in developing computer systems for flood prediction and warning, and recently directed the development of a real-time flood alert system (FAS2) for the Texas Medical Center (TMC) in Houston. The FAS2 is based on converting NEXRAD radar data directly to rainfall in a GIS framework, which is then used to predict peak channel flows. Dr. Bedient is organizing the Houston test bed for the Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA), an NSF Engineering Research Center led by University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and Rice University is a strategic outreach partners. CASA’s revolutionary sensing technology is expected to increase the warning time for flash floods and other severe weather events with greater accuracy than existing systems. The first high technology radar was deployed in 2007 in the TMC in Houston as part of the on-going flood warning system developed for the Texas Medical Center. Dr. Bedient has overseen the monitoring, modeling, and remediation at numerous hazardous waste sites, including six Superfund sites, and U.S. Air Force bases in five states. He has extensive experience in contaminant transport at sites impacted with chlorinated solvents and fuels. He has served on two National Academy of Science committees relating to environmental remediation and technology, and has received research funding from NSF, the U.S. EPA, the U.S. Department of Defense, the State of Texas, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the City of Houston.

Wayne C. Huber is Professor of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at Oregon State University, Corvallis. His doctoral work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology dealt with thermal stratification in reservoirs, for which he received the Lorenz G. Straub Award from the University of Minnesota and the Hilgard Hydraulic Prize from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He is a member of several technical societies and has served several administrative functions within the ASCE. He is the author of over 120 reports and technical papers, is a registered professional engineer, and has served as a consultant on numerous studies done by public agencies and private engineering firms. Beginning at the University of Florida and continuing at Oregon State University, Dr. Huber’s research has included studies of urban hydrology, Storm water management, nonpoint source runoff, river basin hydrology, lake eutrophication, rainfall statistics, and hydrologic and water quality modeling. He is one of the original authors of the EPA Storm Water Management Model and has helped to maintain and improve the model continuously since 1971. Dr. Huber is an internationally recognized authority on runoff quantity and quality processes in urban areas.

Comprehensive and detailed
By hydrostudent
I was required to purchase this book for an entry level hydrology class. Even now, I continually refer back to it as a reference in my graduate level classes. The book comprehensively introduces you to most aspects of hydrology and hydraulics, with examples and case studies that really reinforce the basics. Hang on to it after your class -- you'll find it's a super handy resource.

Useful for Students
By Charles Carmichael
My well-loved copy of this book has helped me though several courses and done so excellently. It has an even balance of theory and practical applications. For each topic there is usually a few paragraphs of explanation, then some formula derivations, then an example. The examples are critical, I have worked through almost all of them at this point and they are really helpful.

Not satisfied
By Donna M. Zerger
It is the correct book for my masters class, but I a week after I bought the book the pages started falling out, and the binding/pages separated from the cover. I would recommend spending the extra money to buy a better quality book. I will now have to spend close to $200 to buy another copy somewhere else.

Why Software Sucks...and What You Can Do About It, by David S. Platt

“I’ve just finished reading the best computer book [Why Software Sucks...] since I last re-read one of mine and I wanted to pass along the good word. . . . Put this one on your must-have list if you have software, love software, hate programmers, or even ARE a programmer, because Mr. Platt (who teaches programming) has set out to puncture the bloated egos of all those who think that just because they can write a program, they can make it easy to use. . . . This book is funny, but it is also an important wake-up call for software companies that want to reduce the size of their customer support bills. If you were ever stuck for an answer to the question, ’Why do good programmers make such awful software?’ this book holds the answer.”
—John McCormick, Locksmith columnist, TechRepublic.com “I must say first, I don’t get many computing manuscripts that make me laugh out loud. Between the laughs, Dave Platt delivers some very interesting insight and perspective, all in a lucid and engaging style. I don’t get much of that either!”
—Henry Leitner, assistant dean for information technology andsenior lecturer on computer science, Harvard University “A riotous book for all of us downtrodden computer users, written in language that we understand.”
—Stacy Baratelli, author’s barber “David’s unique take on the problems that bedevil software creation made me think about the process in new ways. If you care about the quality of the software you create or use, read this book.”
—Dave Chappell, principal, Chappell & Associates “I began to read it in my office but stopped before I reached the bottom of the first page. I couldn’t keep a grin off my face! I’ll enjoy it after I go back home and find a safe place to read.”
—Tsukasa Makino, IT manager “David explains, in terms that my mother-in-law can understand, why the software we use today can be so frustrating, even dangerous at times, and gives us some real ideas on what we can do about it.”
—Jim Brosseau, Clarrus Consulting Group, Inc. A Book for Anyone Who Uses a Computer Today...and Just Wants to Scream!

Today’s software sucks. There’s no other good way to say it. It’s unsafe, allowing criminal programs to creep through the Internet wires into our very bedrooms. It’s unreliable, crashing when we need it most, wiping out hours or days of work with no way to get it back. And it’s hard to use, requiring large amounts of head-banging to figure out the simplest operations.

It’s no secret that software sucks. You know that from personal experience, whether you use computers for work or personal tasks. In this book, programming insider David Platt explains why that’s the case and, more importantly, why it doesn’t have to be that way. And he explains it in plain, jargon-free English that’s a joy to read, using real-world examples with which you’re already familiar. In the end, he suggests what you, as a typical user, without a technical background, can do about this sad state of our software—how you, as an informed consumer, don’t have to take the abuse that bad software dishes out.

As you might expect from the book’s title, Dave’s expose is laced with humor—sometimes outrageous, but always dead on. You’ll laugh out loud as you recall incidents with your own software that made you cry. You’ll slap your thigh with the same hand that so often pounded your computer desk and wished it was a bad programmer’s face. But Dave hasn’t written this book just for laughs. He’s written it to give long-overdue voice to your own discovery—that software does, indeed, suck, but it shouldn’t.

Today’s software sucks. There’s no other good way to say it. It’s unsafe, allowing criminal programs to creep through the Internet wires into our very bedrooms. It’s unreliable, crashing when we need it most, wiping out hours or days of work with no way to get it back. And it’s hard to use, requiring large amounts of head banging to figure out the simplest operations.

This isn’t news to you, is it? You’re not dumb, contrary to what that yellow-and-black book series would have you believe. Today’s software really does suck, as you’ve always thought. That’s why you laughed when you read the title of this book. And it wasn’t a voluntary laugh, either, was it? You didn’t read the title and think to yourself, “Hey, that’s kinda funny, I think I’ll laugh.” No. The title touched a nerve, like a smell knifing through your cerebral cortex to your reptilian midbrain, and you burst out with an involuntary, explosive laugh. When you started thinking again, you probably thought something like, “Hey, cool! Here’s a guy (an articulate, credentialed, handsome, and modest one, too, by the look of things) telling it like it is, saying in print what I’ve always thought. About time, too.” Indeed it is. This book explains in nontechnical, jargon-free language exactly how this situation came about, and what you can do to change it. “Damn right I’ll buy it! And copies for my friends, too.” Excellent idea. Told you that you weren’t a dummy, didn’t I?

Fifteen years ago—even ten—ordinary people didn’t use software in their daily lives. My parents did not send e-mail birthday cards to their granddaughters, or expect me to send them digital photos that way. They balanced their checking accounts on a paper register and maintained their schedules by writing in ink on paper calendars with pretty pictures. The few people who did regularly use software usually had to as part of their jobs—for example, travel agents using airline reservation systems to issue tickets. These people used small, custom-tailored applications that required expensive, proprietary hardware and extensive training and ongoing support and that weren’t useful for any other purpose. The World Wide Web was this geeky thing for wooly haired academics. Most people didn’t even know it existed, let alone that you could steal music or download dirty pictures from it.

That’s changed completely, almost overnight in societal terms, and seemingly without our noticing it. My parents now use a financial software package to manage their checking accounts, which pays bills electronically so that they don’t run out of stamps, and automatically shows electronic deposits and cleared checks as they arrive at the bank. Not only do they want granddaughter photos by e-mail, but they’re also asking for live streaming video. With unlimited high-speed access available to home users for about $40 per month, the Web has accomplished what proponents of nuclear power predicted and never managed to do, which is become too cheap to meter. It’s now so ubiquitous that the state of Pennsylvania has removed its motto, “The Keystone State,” from its automobile license plates and replaced it with the state Web address, www.state.pa.us. Florida has done Pennsylvania one better, keeping its slogan but replacing the state name with the Web address MyFlorida.com. And the travel agent’s profession has been largely wiped out by ordinary people having cheap, easy access to information that once required very expensive and complicated setups.

We live our lives today in a sea of software, but most users have no idea how software comes into being or why it works the way it does. We only know that we don’t like it very much. Everyone has a software horror story or five, just as we have airline horror stories about flights delayed for hours on the runway and luggage misrouted to Timbuktu. You worked all day with your program, didn’t realize you had to explicitly save your document, then that damn program crashed and you lost it all. And the random pattern of bits on your screen looked exactly like it was flipping you the bird as it went down. From TIME magazine’s 1982 pick as “Man of the Year” the personal computer’s reputation has gone downhill.

Software doesn’t have to suck, and it shouldn’t, but it does. One reason is that the programmers and architects and managers who develop it don’t understand their customers anywhere near as well as they should, as well as designers in other industries have been forced to. Their products suck not because developers don’t know how to do this or that particular thing, but because they don’t know which things to do. They’re disconnected from their customers (some would call them victims)—the ones who pay their salaries—and they usually don’t realize it. They often solve the wrong problem, adding features that no one cares about except themselves, harming all users in the process. If they understood who their users are, they’d make different, better choices.

For example, Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel allow a user to drag the main menu (the one with File, Edit, and Help on it) from its usual location at the top of the window to any other edge of the screen, or even floating free over a document (see Figure 4). I’ve never met or even heard of anybody, and I mean not one single person, who has ever used this feature, not even my contacts on the Office team. So why does it hurt the program to have it? For many reasons. I occasionally reach my mouse up to click the File menu and instead overshoot by a little, usually when I’ve had too much coffee, and find myself dragging the menu bar around on my screen. I have to stop what I’m doing, drag the bar back where it belongs, dock it in the place where it belongs, above the toolbar; then spend half a minute cursing the ancestry of the morons who wrote this dumb, so-called feature. This might not sound like much, but 30 seconds twice a day, times a billion users, add up to wasting roughly 27 human life spans every single day. 1 I, and the vast majority of users, would be more productive if this feature was completely removed from the program so that we wouldn’t waste our time and break our concentration by having to deal with this nonsense. In addition, the extra programming instructions (called “code” by programmers) needed to provide this feature increase the possibility of crashing errors and security vulnerabilities, in the same way as more moving parts on any mechanical device render it less reliable. The world would be a better place if Microsoft had taken the money it spent on designing, writing, testing, debugging, documenting, and supporting this foolishness and burned it, or better yet, given it to me. Worst of all, these antiproductive doodads consume development resources that could have and should have been spent on items that most users actually do care about, such as falling over dead less often and not losing work when that happens. The ultimate example of resources wasted on counterproductive features is Clippy, the talking, dancing, irritating paper clip in Microsoft Office (added in 1997, deactivated by popular demand in 2002). 2

Not only does software suck today, but it will continue to do so until we demand that it stop. Our cars improved in terms of safety (air bags and antilock brakes), reliability (better engineering leading to fewer failures), and usability (CD players and cup holders) only when customers started demanding them, buying cars that had them and passing over those that didn’t. My mother always told me not to complain about something unless I had a better idea. I do have many better ideas, and I give them to you as I point out the foolishness of some current software design decisions. While this isn’t primarily a how-to book, I reveal all the tricks that I know to mitigate the most awful effects of bad program design—for example, turning off the confirmation dialog (“Are you sure? Really sure? Really, really, really sure?”) that appears when you send a document to the Windows Recycle Bin. More importantly, this book explains what you and I need to do to make our voices heard in the software industry so that it stops sucking, hopefully soon. It worked for Clippy, didn’t it?

At the same time, I have to tell you that developing software is different in many ways from developing physical objects, things that you can drop on your foot. When you build, say, a table out of wood, the inherent properties of the material preclude some design choices and dictate others. For example, you know that you can’t weld it, but you can fasten it with screws, and you can make it only so thin before it bends unacceptably. Software, on the other hand, imposes very few inherent constraints. It is almost infinitely tractable. As Frederick Brooks said in his classic book on software development, The Mythical Man-Month, Anniversary Edition (Addison Wesley, 1995)—which I’ve suggested that he retitle to “The Mystical Geek Week,” because of today’s accelerated project schedules—programmers work with “nearly pure thought-stuff.” I’ve always described programming as trying to stuff smoke into a bottle. So I’ll explain to you what really is inherently difficult to make a program do (surviving a power blip, for example, or making a new program compatible with previous versions3) as opposed to what’s simply a boneheaded design decision by an idiot designer who should have known better.

I teach software development at Harvard University Extension School and at companies all over the world. I’ve written nine books for programmers and development managers, along with many journal articles and newsletters. Despite these disadvantages, I promise you that my writing is never dry. I did my best to stay away from geek jargon. For example, you won’t find the word gigabyte appearing in this book,4 but I’ll refer to “a quarter’s worth of disk space,” which is about the same thing at the time of this writing.

I’ve found this book surprisingly easy to write compared to some of my others. The late sportswriter, Red Smith (1906-1982), liked to say, “Writing is easy. You just open your veins and bleed.” As I hope you’ve already seen, I feel passionately about the issues I raise here. When I finish ranting in a live talk (“Windows XP is a decent product for the price. Windows 98 is an inferior piece of crap that isn’t worth the powder to blow it to hell”), my students often say, “Gosh, Platt, stop beating around the bush and tell us how you really feel.” To which I reply, “If you’re accusing me of calling ’em as I see ’em, I plead guilty as charged.” This book is not just an explanation for you; it’s my cry to the heavens for sanity in this crazy profession. And I hope when you read this, you’ll add your voice to mine.

Notes:
  • A billion minutes is 694,444 days, 1,901 years, or just over 27 spans of 70 years.
  • I am not alone in detesting that vile, Gollum-like creature. As lawyers Dahlia Lithwick and Brandt Goldstein wrote in Me v. Everybody: Absurd Contracts for an Absurd World (Workman Publishing, 2003): “3. The Maniacal-Paper-Clip-With-Eyebrows Provision. You will delete/disable/destroy whatever it is that allows that inane little bastard to leap around the bottom right-hand corner of my screen, emitting what can only be described as a mechanical fart and incessantly observing: ‘I see that you’re writing a ransom note . . .’ or assuming that I wish it to turn all my letters into spreadsheets and my correspondence into numbered lists.”
  • A favorite programmer joke runs, “How did God manage to create the world in only six days? He didn’t have any installed base he had to worry about backwards compatibility with.” My editor points out that He also skimped on documentation.
  • Yes, I know, except for this once, wiseguy.

Enjoyable Read for Anyone, but Aimed at the Non-Expert Software User
    By Mark Podrazik
As an Engineering/Management professional who regularly works with software developers, I picked up this book hoping for an interesting read with maybe a few pearls of wisdom that might benefit someone in my position. I held no false impression of this being a management text; I was merely looking for insights. Also, I confess that I enjoyed the boldness of the title. (You marketing guys: always messing with our heads!)

In this regard, Platt did not disappoint. While essentially reaffirming much of the knowledge and many of the beliefs I held regarding software development and the truly creative people who do it for a living, the author tossed out enough new thoughts, peppered with a sense of humor welcome enough to keep me engaged.

Individuals not familiar with the process of software development will no doubt find the content even more illuminating. The author is spot-on in his assessment of where software developers go wrong, having witnessed it myself over many years in product development.

If this book had been a more difficult read, I would have been disappointed. As it is, "Sucks" was an enjoyable, quick read with just enough substantive content to be worth my effort. That is, it had decent balance--time investment vs. intellectual return.

I would gauge this book as being targeted at (or most appropriate for) the knowledgeable, but not necessarily expert, software user. Readers in this group are likely to have an informative and enjoyable experience.

Finally someone speaks up for the silent majority!
    By Carey Holzman
I never heard of David Platt prior to reading this book. His title as a Harvard professor in software design prepared me for a dry and technical book on software design.

I'm happy to say there is nothing 'dry' or boring about Mr. Platt's writing style. The book is easy to read and you'll find yourself nodding along with the examples he gives. Why do we accept poor software design? I failed to even recognize bad software until Mr. Platt specifically pointed it out. At which point, I smacked myself in the head and said "of course!"

If you are an average computer user and wonder why things are the way they are, this book is for you. If you are a programmer who wants to write successful software that average computer users will praise, this book is for you.

On the other hand, if you are a technical user or programmer who can do no wrong, heaven forbid you pick up a book that has the potential to broaden your horizons.

In my opinion, this is one of the best books on software design that is written with humor and analogies to make it easy for anyone to understand and show them what they can do about it.

Thank you, Mr. Platt. The industry has been needing this book since computers went mainstream back in the early 1990's.

Finally, a voice from the silent majority!

Very accurate, funny, and rather humbling (as a software designer)...
    By Thomas Duff
Although targeted towards explaining to ordinary people why computer software is hard to use, Why Software Sucks...and What You Can Do About It by David S. Platt is something that software developers would do well to read and understand how we blow it on a regular basis. Five words... The. User. Is. Not. You.

Contents: Who're You Calling A Dummy?; Tangled In The Web; Keep Me Safe; Who The Heck Are You?; Who're You Looking At?; Ten Thousand Geeks, Crazed On Jolt Cola; Who Are These Crazy B@st@ards Anyway?; Microsoft - Can't Live With 'em And Can't Live Without 'em; Doing Something About It; Epilogue; About The Author

Platt takes a look at software and web sites from the perspective of the user, someone who's just trying to get something done. And his overwhelming conclusion is... software sucks. In large part, this is because the computer geeks who design the software are completely mistaken as to who is the target user. They design something that works for themselves, thinking that everyone thinks and reacts as they do. They think that complexity is cool, and whiz-bang features should be appreciated in and of themselves. The reality is that the basic user does *not* think like a computer geek, and they get tired of sites that make no sense or make them work (or rework) for the reward at the end. Using good/bad site contrasts such as Google (guesses the language to use based on the IP address/location) vs. UPS (ask for your country EVERY SINGLE TIME before you can do anything), it becomes quickly apparent when a site's been designed by computer geeks rather than design/interface specialists who are able to think like a user. Armed with this book, a person can start to understand why things are harder than they need to be, and what steps can be taken to make your displeasure known. It may not change anything, but being silent isn't a viable option either.

Now for computer software designers like myself, this book can be humbling. I think I've done a few of the things he condemns, and I found myself rethinking (*and* changing) a few of my website project features after reading this. I realized I was forcing the user to understand my world before they could do something. And if I couldn't explain it well, how did I expect them to grasp it? But aside from being a useful and extremely funny book, there's one chapter that was a joy to read. Ten Thousand Geeks explains the concept of software conferences and what they're like. Furthermore, he talks about what it's like to be a speaker at one; the joys, trials, and adrenaline rushes that come with being in front of people and mingling with your speaker peers afterwards. It was like reading my own story, and it was incredibly accurate. I would love to print out about five paragraphs of that chapter and post it with the title "This Is Why We Speak At Conferences." That chapter was worth the price of the book by itself...

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to someone on a number of levels and for a number of reasons... Well worth the time spent reading it.

If we didn’t know darkness, we couldn’t fully appreciate the light.

Garth Black’s more familiar with this concept than most people are. He hadn’t just lived in the dark for the majority of his life—he thrived in it. With a mom who’d bailed on him and a dad whose understanding of coddling started and ended with a bottle of whiskey, Garth had never been expected to rise to any sort of occasion other than following down the same dead-end paths.

That changed when he fell in love with Josie Gibson. After years of pulling each other closer before shoving the other way, they finally stopped shoving. Josie’s love is like nothing Garth’s ever experienced. He holds it close. He holds it sacred. He would do anything to preserve it and keep it from pollution, even if that means removing himself from the picture.

Garth might have been allowed a temporary furlough to bask in the light, but that pass has been revoked, and he’s been swallowed again by the dark. Will he revert to his old ways of hurting those he cares for most? Will he go back to the same destructive patterns . . . or will it be worse this time?

We can’t know light without first knowing dark . . . and Garth Black’s about to get acquainted with the dark in a whole new way.

    5 heartfelt stars!

Gut-wrenching. The gorgeous Garth finally has everything the way it's supposed to be when tragedy strikes. Poor broken Garth!

"How could one moment, one flash in time, be responsible for changing my whole existence?"

What I loved most about this book was Josie's strength and determination. She was even more stubborn than Garth and that's saying something! Her love was unconditional and she had to fight long and hard to prove that to Garth. While his heart was in the right place I really wanted to knock sense into him a few times while reading this.

Such an emotional roller-coaster of a ride, the writing was so addictive that I couldn't put it down.

Computation Structures (MIT Electrical Engineering and Computer Science), by Stephen Ward, Robert Halstead

Developed as the text for the basic computer architecture course at MIT, Computation Structures integrates a thorough coverage of digital logic design with a comprehensive presentation of computer architecture. It contains a wealth of information for those who design computers or work with computer systems, spanning the entire range of topics from analog circuit design to operating systems. Ward and Halstead seek to demystify the construction of computing hardware by illustrating systematically how it is built up from digital circuits through higher level components to processors and memories, and how its design is affected by its intended uses.Computation Structures is unusually broad in scope, considering many real world problems and tradeoff decisions faced by practicing engineers. These difficult choices are confronted and given careful attention throughout the book.Topics addressed include the digital abstraction; digital representations and notation; combinational devices and circuits; sequence and state; synthesis of digital systems; finite state machines; control structures and disciplines; performance measures and tradeoffs; communication; interpretation; microinterpreter architecture; microprogramming and microcode; single sequence machines; stack architectures; register architectures; reduced instruction set computers; memory architectures; processes and processor multiplexing; process synchronization; interrupts, priorities, and real time; directions and trends.Stephen A. Ward and Robert H. Halstead are both Associate Professors of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at MIT. Computation Structures is included in the MIT Electrical Engineering and Computer Science series.

    Amazon.com Review
Computation Structures focuses on computer architecture as a complicated problem in digital design. As such, the initial sections discuss the basic principles of designing digital circuits and systems. The context is subsequently used to discuss more and more advanced ideas without a lot of confusing structure. For example, pipelining is initially discussed in terms of speeding up simple arithmetic circuits, which allows the reader to focus on the conceptual issues of pipelining rather than the embedded problem. Using this aggregative approach, the authors build their way up through a series of simple machines to begin talking about processes and process semantics. In addition, Computation Structures contains a nice section on microcode, which is seldom discussed in most books. The text is clear and the exercises well chosen.

    Timeless concepts
    By G. Avvinti
This book is quite idiosyncratic in its kind. The content is quite theoretic, so that probably it won't be the best choice for more pragmatic and practice-oriented courses, for which the two books from Patterson-Hennessy, e.g., will be more suited. However, the value of this book lays in the shocking amount of knowledge it carries. This is the classic gap-filling book: my opinion is that many CS student of us that will read this book page by page, will discover that they really didn't know something they thought they knew instead. This is simply because the discussion is organic and continuos from the start to the end, and the writing is never too hard, so that any gap will easily show itself during the reading.
Have a look at the table of contents. It starts from digital logic basics and it ends at the Interrupts chapter (this means, almost, operating systems). The distance seems to be prohibitive, but the path traced by prof. Ward and Halstead is remarkably solid and meaningful. Once basic logic circuits blocks are covered, it leads to computation issues (from FSM to Turing Machines), passing from performance considerations (e.g. pipelining) and memory hierarchies (cache memory is extensively covered).
Two chapters are devoted to milestone architectures: the S machine and the G machine. Such a thorough coverage on these two machines is something I've not found in other books.
The chapters on Processes, Processor Multiplexing, Processes Synchronization and Interrupts are good and at the level of an OS course. The astonishing thing is that the background to face these issues is well built before (again, recall that the book starts from basic Logic Levels !).
This book has been a very worthy read. My course used materials from different books, internet resources and my instructor's knowledge. The instructor itself suggested us to give the book a complete read when we had time (we didn't cover all the topics of the book) because we would have really learned important things. I've not done it completely, but the more I do it, the more I agree.

    Outstanding introduction
    By wiredweird
Ward and Halstead have put together the best introduction to computing hardware I've seen. Only Wirth's Digital Circuit Design for Computer Science Students equals it, but with a slightly different thrust and a good deal less detail in its coverage. The authors wrote this book as a text for a grueling one-semester course, but I can imagine it working well as a two-term book for students who need more time to absorb material.

It twenty-one chapters (plus appendices) start at the transistor level, then "whole-heartedly accept the digital abstraction." Fast-paced discussions apply that abstraction to the workhorses of digital design: binary numbers, logic realization, state machines, and synchronous design discipline. By the book's midpoint, it already addresses microcode control of the datapaths that students have already examined, and move on to implementation of two different insturction sets on microcoded platform that the students designed (with guidance) and built. Given this gritty level of understanding, the last chapters address system issues, including the software process abstraction, operating system concerns, and a little about interfacing to electronics outside of the processor itself.

Omissions matter as much as inclusions in the book's syllabus. The text breezes over logic minimization, logic hazards, state machine design, giving just enough of each tool for a student to get a job done. Asynchronous design appears only briefly, to explain the goings-in inside of latches and registers. Large-scale issues of clock jitter and skew appear briefly if at all. Students who eventually need to know the fussy bits can learn them elsewhere, but those bodies of knowledge really don't support the goal of computing system design. By analogy, a mechanical engineer could study the details of a screw's thread pitch, depth, and geometry or of steel's metallurgy, but neither will really help in building a bridge. Those low-level details matter, but interfere with higher-level integration.

One aspect of this book deserves equal praise and complaint. The 1990 copyright date means that it's quickly moving into the past. It treats TTL and even RTL as going concerns, and omits FPGAs completely. To be really useful, this book's obsolete technologies need an update. At the same time, this older perspective keeps microcoding alive and well, the only book I know that puts it in the students's hands and put it to work. Microprogramming is an idea whose time has come (again) in control for large-scale logic design, as a useful step between the mouse-milking fussiness of state-machine control and the heavyweight sluggishness of standard instruction set processors. More importantly, this puts the processor's instruction set and basic operation back under the student's control, where it needs to be for today's configurable computing.

Don't let the age put you off. No other title surpasses this as an introductory text for designers of computing hardware. It bridges the much-ignored gap between logic design and computer architecture. It neither bogs down in carry chains and Booth multipliers, nor leaps ahead to virtual memory and interprocessor communication. I recommend it to any student who wants a practical approach to this important layer in computing's conceptual stack.
