Despite the rich subject matter of Rodin's life, there have been virtually no English-language biographical studies since the 1930s. Grunfeld's lively but uneven work updates information about Rodin's stormy romances, but is less thorough in studying the sculptor's relationships with influential political and literary figures, and seems to gloss over the effects of financial worries, relations with official salons, etc., on Rodin's artistic production. The book's racy who's who of fin-de-siecle French society make it a good addition for general collections; more reflective treatments will still be found in Robert Descharnes's August Rodin (Viking, 1967) and Albert Elsen's In Rodin's Studio (Cornell Univ. Fabulous Biography

It is hard to believe that this book did not engender more attention or acclaim. It is absolutely the best I have ever read on Rodin the man and the artist. His life and background is presented in remarkable detail and photographs of many of his most famous works are presented.
His views on religion, love, sex, France, art - everything is here for the asking. His workings and interaction with the many artists are captured, and this is especially important since this was a particularly vibrant and intellectually fertile time in the history of art. His love for France and for all things French is expressed over and over. His letters give us a glimpse into the "real" man, the artist who finally married his lover toward the end of their lives. He was the man who challenged the world, leading the army of Romanticism forward, only to be called old-fashioned and out of date when he refused to change with the times. What a life and what a book!

No stone left unturned

I think the author has done a heroic job of pulling together all the scraps of information about Rodin's life into a single tome. Rodin himself would have approved of the characterization of himself as a misunderstood genius who worked without compromise or the least hint of encouragement until he was almost 40.

But at over 600 pages in length (of which the first 80 page cover his family history and the first 35 years of his life), this is a book for the serious student or the masochist. Rodin is carefully described in context with the turn of the 20th century artist community he lived in and the rich society patrons who bought his art, the letters they wrote, the parties they attended. A story told in an enormous amount of detail with a single unwavering spotlight.

Fran�ois-Auguste-Ren� Rodin was regarded by many in his lifetime as the successor of Michelangelo. His career spanned a epoch scarred by the Franco-Prussian War, Commune, fall of Napoleon III, and World War I. Despite civic calamity, he thrived with luminous contemporaries like Bonnard, Degas, Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Gauguin, C�zanne, Matisse, Hugo, Zola, Mirbeau, Proust, Debussy, Saint-Sa�ns, Faur�, Chabrier, Bizet, Lalo, Gounod, and Ofenbach. How these legends flourished in adversity is the great paradox of the period.

The age, celebrated by expositions and landmarks like the controversial 300m Eiffel tower, heralded innovation that broadened travel and extended publicity. Rodin was wise enough to leverage both to become an international celebrity. His century-old legacy remains fresh, vital and expressive: in many respects it's still unsurpassed.

This amply illustrated text explores Rodin's provenance, training, influences, bohemian lifestyle, amorous liaisons, travels, influences, works, altier production, contemporaries, publicity, and honors in a lucid narrative of a seminal artist and his age.

Fascinating and profound

In this book, Miki Kashtan leads us towards a vision of a world that works for all. This gives me hope at a time when I often feel overwhelmed by our current ways of being together on this planet which seem so unsustainable. What got us here, she says, is negating our needs and emotions (traced back to the Enlightenment and earlier influences) with a view of human nature that assumes we are motivated by self interest and that we have a need to control our unruly impulses.

In the process of exploring these influences, Miki tackles huge questions such as the root causes of violence and oppression, fundamental problems with our economic systems, the place of money in our lives, and much more. She also adds to Freud's work by suggesting an integration of social and historical context with psychological analysis. Although this isn't the first time I've encountered most of these ideas, I found her insights to be fascinating and profound.

In addition, Miki gives a touching and poignant psychosocial analysis of her own childhood while relating her life to the bigger picture of social influences on individual lives. All this might sound somewhat depressing if it weren't for the fact that she suggests major ideas for how change could happen. She advocates transforming our relationship with our human needs, making the assumption that all actions are an attempt to meet needs and that human needs are universal and fundamentally life affirming. She writes: "conflicts, suffering and the many destructive aspects of human life all are the result of ignoring, mistrusting, denying, and suppressing rather than understanding, accepting and embracing our needs."

To me this book represents a profound way of revisioning who we are and what we are doing that recovers the essential sacredness of our place in nature and our fundamental interrelatedness and interdependence. Miki provides many practical ways to begin transforming ourselves together with our social systems and institutions that goes way beyond a typical self-help book.

I didn't find it an easy book to read in that the complex nature of the threads she weaves throughout will take me some time to fully digest. I highly recommend the book for anyone who wants to seriously ponder the big questions of our day. Miki's answers are definitely not easy to put into practice as she fully explains, yet starting on this path would seem to have immense potential benefit for anyone who embraces this journey and ultimately for all of us.

Finally, it's here!

I've only started reading the book this week. Here is but a piece of what I've experienced thus far.
The journal of Miki's mother recording Miki's early life and Miki's accompanying thoughts about the journal, has gripped my heart. I'm experiencing as a mother, the long term impact of a mother's words and I'm moved to remember my own experience as a child and the possible experiences of my children. Through the practice of self empathy, I'm having great compassion for parents and children everywhere.
One action I am now taking, is writing journal thoughts of my adult children and my grandchildren with the intent of enriching their lives after my death. I thought it was too late or 'too much' keeping up with it to do something tangible and lasting that would support their vision of knowing and loving themselves though my experience with them. Knowing the impact of words, the lifelong mark they can leave in another's life, why would I wait and tell myself it's too late!

I've known Miki as my teacher for many years. Again and again, the experience I have through her way of entering what life brings, supports me in living a life of 'awakened transparency.' Along with this deep desire, I'm quieted and reassured by something in me that is reminded of the courage, love, and truth involved in living a life of nonviolence.

Because of the honest, authentic, and transparent life Miki Kashtan lives, I recommend with trust this book to everyone beginning or reexamining living a fully integrated life of authentic expression.

Raises Fascinating Questions About the Realities We Create for Ourselves

This is Emoto's second book. Like his first (The Hidden Power of Water),this is full of dozens of water crystal photos. The most stunning photos come from positive words written or spoken to the water samples before freezing and photographing. Beautiful crystals are also formed by playing classical or complex music to the samples; the ugly and deformed crystals have been subjected to heavy metal music. (When I called his office in Japan to get permission to show some of these photos in my workshops and presentations, one of Emoto�(tm)s research assistants emphasized that "Dr. Emoto isn't against heavy metal music." Water samples that were prayed to ""even though the water sample was polluted" also resulted in dazzling crystals.

Emoto's research has led him to conclude that "water faithfully mirrors all the vibrations created in the world, and changes these vibrations into a form that can be seen with the human eye."

"Since our human body is about 70 percent water, do we also mirror and manifest the vibrations we surround ourselves with? If so, what kind of reality is that creating in our lives?"

About the Author

John Truss has taught at Oxford University, Paisley College of Technology and currently at the University of Leeds. He has been a committee member of the British Logic Colloquium since 1990, and has recently been appointed an editor of the Journal of the London Mathematical Society. He wrote Foundations of Mathematical Analysis in 1997 and has authored 40 research papers.

Skims the Surface

I am a teacher's assistant for an undergraduate computer science course that uses this book. I have to say that it really is a terrible book for students to learn from who have never had much exposure to non-calculus math and the concept of the "mathematical proof". It skims over topics without providing enough exposition on the topics to allow students to have a fair grasp on the subject. This may just be the nature of teaching discrete math, but there seem to be far too many topics that Truss is trying to squeeze into too small of a space. He tries to throw in some more advanced topics such as formal machines and complexity theory, but only at the cost of having the overall quality of the material be watered down. Sadly, though, from what I have heard, this is the best current intro discrete math book out there.

Packed, pithy, and clear!

I will have to agree with the other reviewer that it seems as if Truss is trying to cram lots and lots of discrete mathematics into an indiscrete stack of 500pp but i think he has done very well. At least in addressing those who need to skim over the material quickly, though they would love instead to relish on Grimaldi's.

In addition, a highly useful Appendix contains "A Collection of Formulas" for determining the load per inch deflection of linear springs, the load per radian rotation of rotational springs, the natural frequencies of simple systems, the longitudinal and torsional vibration of uniform beams, the transverse or bending vibrations of uniform beams, and the vibrations of rings, membranes, and plates.
When Mechanical Vibrations was first published in 1934, it was a pioneering work in a field which had just been introduced in America's technical schools. In fact, the author wrote it to assist him in teaching the subject at Harvard. "During the life of the book," he says, "from 1934 on, the art and science of engineering has grown at an astonishing rate and the subject of vibration has expanded with it." Professor Den Hartog's constant revisions have kept his book at the forefront of this vital subject, as useful today as its earlier versions were to students of the past.

About the Author

J. P. Den Hartog: The Reprint Engineer
J. P. Den Hartog (1901–1989), who taught for most of his career at MIT, was one of the founders of the Dover reprint program in engineering. As the author of several books that Dover reprinted and still has in print, and as an advisor from the 1950s until just a few years before his death in 1989, Professor Den Hartog gave invaluable advice concerning books of lasting interest and importance in his field.

Not many books in engineering have a productive shelf life spanning several decades. Among the exceptions are these four books of Professor Den Hartog, which Dover reprinted and occasionally revised in later printings from 1961 through 1987: Mechanics, 1961, Strength of Materials, 1961, Mechanical Vibrations, 1985, and Advanced Strength of Materials, 1987. Still widely read and cited by authors in these areas, Den Hartog's books are a tribute to his gift for exposition and clarity.

Theory applied to practical problems

I purchased Hartog's book together with Meirovitch's Fundamentals of Vibrations and Kelly's Schaum's Mechanical vibrations. I must say that Hartog and Meirovitch complement each other beautifully whereas Kelly's book feels a little superfluous.

It is clear from the book that Hartog himself had extensive experience with real world vibration analysis. The theory is developed while analyzing a range of mechanical mechanisms and electrical circuits that frequently are important in real vibrating systems. Hartogs book is therefore useful as a reference, for instance for how the piston excite vibrations in the engine frame. Although quite old, the book does not feel dated. The type setting is old school with numerous small but clear figures.

Meirovitch's book is more modern in its presentation. Meirovitch prepares the reader for modern methods of vibration analysis such as frequency response analysis of continuous systems with the aid of the finite element method. Meirovitch also make extensive use of matrix algebra and analytical mechanics. However, Meirovitch lacks in practical examples.

Overall I recomend the book, especially in combination with Meirovitch.

The leading classic in vibration engineering.

This book was first published in 1934 by McGraw-Hill and remained through 4 editions for 40 years one of McGraw-Hil's all-time best sellers in engineering and physics. It is filled with practical examples and continues to be a major source for down-to-earth explanations of vibrational phenomena. Partly because of the intellectual and practical impact of this book, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers established the ASME J. P. Den Hartog Award that recognizes life-ltime contributions to the teaching and practice of vibration engineering. All active workers who I know in vibration engineering own and frequently consult this book.
